Natalie Portman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Drew Barrymore and More Shine At the New York City Ballet Fall GalaSep 20, 2013 @ 7:15 pm
As Sarah Jessica Parker crossed Lincoln Center on the wings of designers Prabal Gurung and Olivier Theyskens—wearing a pale-pink confection of their creation—the scene was so, well, fabulous that one could imagine Carrie Bradshaw fainting into the arms of Aleksandr Petrovsky by the Revson Fountain. Asked if she had a say in her dress, Parker answered: “Who wants a say when you’re working with these two? A third say is not important.” The New York City Ballet Fall Gala hosted Natalie Portman with husband Benjamin Millepied and InStyle’s September 2013 cover girl Drew Barrymore at the David H. Koch Theater for a performance, including the premieres (with original choreography and original costumes) of “Capricious Maneuvers” from choreographer Justin Peck and designer Gurung, “Neverwhere” from choreographer Millepied and designer Iris Van Herpen, and “Spectral Evidence” from choreographer Angelin Preljocaj and designer Theyskens. “I think it was a great point in their careers to take this on,” said Parker, a gala chairman, about the designers. “I know Olivier has been wanting to do something like this and Prabal and I had talked about it, six to eight months ago, so I just think this is one of those confluences of things that come together at the right time. But for us, it’s an enormous opportunity for the arts.”

You won’t be the only one—celebrity moms are fans of synchronized ensembles, too. Got a black-and-white striped top, like Kate Moss? Outfit your teensy counterpart in a lookalike shift. Or take on a floral motif with a midi skirt (for you) and a printed dress (for her), like Sarah Jessica Parker and her girly girls. Hollywood, British Royalty, and the fashion industry collided yesterday evening in London’s Hyde Park at the Serpentine Gallery Summer Party! Co-hosted by L’Wren Scott, the annual fundraiser for the modern and contemporary art institute—a favorite spot of the late Princess Diana— brought together a wide range of notable attendees including Alice Eve (in L’Wren Scott) and Sarah Jessica Parker (in Naeem Khan), who posed alongside the designer in front of the soirees centerpiece, the 2013 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, as well as Naomi Campbell, and Kate Moss (in Saint Laurent). Princess Beatrice of York (in L’Wren Scott) and Glee‘s Matthew Morrison were also on-hand at the midsummer’s night fete where they mingled in the spacious gardens and enjoyed a performance by buzzed-about British artist, Jake Bugg. You heard right: Overalls are making a comeback. Thanks to fashion’s cyclical nature, our beloved ’80s and ’90s-era dungarees are back with a vengeance, cropping up on the streets and red carpet events alike. We dug into our archives to discover that celebs (not to mention, royalty!) were once fans of the denim silhouette, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Christina Applegate and Princess Diana. While stepping and clasping one on does evoke a wave of childhood nostalgia, a number of styling missteps could land you right back on the playground. Revisit the classic look with some star-inspired updates: Pair it with a striped shirt or blouse (don’t forget to roll up the sleeves!) for a laidback vibe, a la Alexa Chung, or pick a playful all-over print for a dressier occasion, like Ashley Madekwe. Feeling bold? Then team it with bright accessories for a modern spin, like Rihanna. If you’re still uncertain, go back to the basics. Throw on some heels, stash your plaid shirt, and you’ve mastered the art of making throwback fashion new again.
