Inside the Party: Amy Poehler Hosts Los Angeles Fundraiser for Worldwide Orphans Foundation

Four years after Worldwide Orphans Foundation founder Dr. Jane Aronson met Amy Poehler at an event, the star’s life has taken on a whole new role—supporter of Aronson’s cause to transform the lives of orphaned children in third-world countries. “Like most people who meet her and hear her, I instantly believed in her and fell in love,” Poehler said of Aronson. In January, the Parks and Recreation star traveled to Haiti on behalf of the foundation to experience its work first-hand, and her involvement came full circle last night when she hosted a WWO fundraising soiree in Los Angeles, where she inspired her star pals Aubrey Plaza, Ahna O’Reilly, Sean Hayes, and Alison Pill to learn more about the issues at hand. “Amy told me that when she went to Haiti it was the littlest things that she did that mattered,” Plaza told InStyle.com at the event, where she perused photos of the organization’s work put together by the photo-printing site Shutterfly.com. For Poehler, the evening was about proving that change can happen one step at a time. “The orphan crisis almost seems too enormous to fix, right? Jane has taught me, and I’ve learned by example, that’s not true,” she said. “You just roll up your sleeves and start working. You’re creating a better future, you’re creating a better world, you’re creating a world that’s full of more love and you’re easing the pain of children all over the world.” Click the photo to see more from the party, and to learn more and donate to the cause, visit wwo.org.

Debra MessingZoeann Murphy

Debra Messing is a celeb with a cause: On page 112 of the new May InStyle, the actress takes us on the road with her as she journeys to Zambia with Population Services International (PSI), a nonprofit that saves lives around the world by providing small but highly effective health interventions to battle the spread of HIV. ”I lost my acting teacher, Paul Walker, to AIDS in 1993,” Messing says in the issue. “It’s a cause that runs deep for me.” While in the country, she even had a public HIV test while there to prove that it’s important for everyone to get one. “Each day in Zambia was an emotional assault—you come face-to-face with people who are ill when they don’t have to be,” Messing says. “That’s where PSI comes in: It brings tools like HIV testing, counseling, condoms, and medicine to communities that need them.” And there are ways you can help, too: Head to the Facebook page of Make (+) More Positive, “like” it, and PSI will donate one HIV test kit to an area in need. Follow @PSIimpact on Twitter for updates, and head to psi.org to donate—just $30 can buy the needed supplies to give one person a year of healthy life. Eco designs aren’t just a fad. The Council of Fashion Designers of America is making going green a priority for designers with the launch of the organization’s first-ever sustainability committee, which will encourage its hundreds of members to follow environmentally-responsible practices. The committee is co-chaired by Loomstate designer Scott Mackinlay Hahn and sustainable jewelry designer Melissa Joy Manning (shown above, middle), and also includes designers like Pamela Love and Victoria Bartlett, shown above left to right, in its steering committee. “Our buying behavior is connected to nature,” Hahn said in a statement. “More than any other association, I look to the CFDA and our community to create beautiful high-quality fashion that inspires the world toward responsible consumption.” And you can get involved: To raise awareness about the initiative, post a photo to Instagram of sustainable subject matter and be sure to include the hashtag #CFDAEarthDay. Or join a Google+ Hangout video chat Wednesday, April 24 at 1 p.m. EST, co-hosted by Hahn, Manning, and model-slash-green activist Amber Valletta. For more information, head to cfda.com.

When Tommy Hilfiger opened his Los Angeles flagship this spring, it wasn’t just a night dedicated to socializing with his celebrity friends like Jessica Alba, Jennifer Lopez, and Julianne Hough. The milestone was also the launch of the Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation’s partnership with P.S. ARTS to endow and develop a multi-year arts education curriculum in two Los Angeles schools, Walgrove Elementary School and Grand View Elementary. The Hilfiger-funded program will help students with autism and other special needs achieve their full academic and career potential by providing over 950 students with ongoing, weekly arts classes. “[My wife] Dee and I are passionate about programs that make sure families dealing with issues like lack of access to medical care and education have access to the resources they need,” Hilfiger told InStyle.com, adding that he’s thrilled to help students by providing “dynamic and innovative learning environments.” And his celebrity fans were happy to throw their support behind the cause. ”I love that [Tommy Hilfiger] advocates for children’s education,” Alba told InStyle.com. “I just love that they support those issues.” Visit psarts.org to learn more about the program, and see more exclusive photos from inside the opening on page 110 of May’s new InStyle issue—also available on your iPad, Nook, or Droid tablet.

What Angelina Jolie Wore to the G8 Conference This Morning

Apr 11, 2013 @ 12:15 pm

Angelina Jolie arrived at the G8 Foreign Ministers’ Conference in London this morning to give a speech to world leaders addressing the pressing global issue of wartime rape. Jolie addressed the issue at hand wearing an all-black ensemble that included an asymmetrical coat pinned at the waist with a brooch, a single strand of pearls and one of the stones in each ear, and a pair of classic nude pumps. “Hundreds of thousands of women and children have been sexually assaulted … in the wars of our generation,” Jolie said to the crowd. “For too long, they have been the forgotten victims of war, responsible for none of the harm but bearing the worst of the pain. This violence can be prevented, and it must be confronted.” Jolie thanked the G8 delegates for their just-announced landmark commitment of $35 million to an education fund dedicated to teaching the global community how to deter and investigate wartime sexual crimes. Head to gov.uk for more information, and click here to watch the rest of Jolie’s speech.

Diane von Furstenberg Celebrates Women at the 4th Annual DVF Awards, Plus More Parties

Apr 8, 2013 @ 3:45 pm

Diane von Furstenberg made her first appearance since getting in an accident (she’s stylishly recovering in a DVF-print-covered sling) for the 4th Annual DVF Awards, held at the United Nations in New York City last Friday, where her presence radiated empowering messages. “I don’t think that you need the word powerful if you say woman,” designer told InStyle.com before honoring five women who have made it their life’s work to help other women and award $50,000 grants to their corresponding non-profits. This year she honored Vodianova, Robin Roberts, Andeisha Farid of the Afghan Child Education and Care Organization, Sunitha Krishnan of the anti-trafficking organization Prajwala, and Tammy Tibbetts, who received the People’s Voice Award for her education charity She’s the First. Von Furstenberg continued to emphasize the strength of women when she took the stage to address the crowd: “I have never met a woman who is not strong,” she said. “They don’t exist. Sometimes they’re not allowed to show their strength by a father, a brother, a religion, or sometimes they don’t even know that they’re strong, but then tragedy happens and miraculously the strength always comes out of a woman.” To learn more about the DVF Awards head to the dvfawards.com.
