Watch This: The Girl Rising Documentary Trailer

Jan 23, 2013 @ 5:01 pm

“I will read. I will study. I will learn. If you try to stop me, I will just try harder,” Anne Hathaway says in the inspiring new trailer for the Richard Robbins-directed documentary Girl Rising, an exploration of how a proper education can change the lives of girls growing up in underprivileged communities around the globe—and consequently change the world. (It’s not the first time the Les Miserables star has taken on a girl-power cause!) The film takes viewers into the lives of girls from Africa to India, and illustrates how simply trying to go to school is sometimes a significant challenge. Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Kerry Washington, Meryl Streep, Selena Gomez, and Cate Blanchett are just a sampling of the stars who lent their voices to the film, in addition to a haunting cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” by up-and-coming British singer Birdy, which also appears in the trailer. Watch the clip above and see the film when it hits theaters March 7th. And click here to find out how you can be more involved in the Girl Rising movement.

Cate Blanchett and Emma Watson: The French Twist at Any Age

Oct 16, 2012 @ 6:02 pm

We’re loving the modern spin that Cate Blanchett and Emma Watson put on the classic French twist at last night’s Women in Hollywood party. Their pinned coif’s looked effortlessly chic. And, as proven by the actresses, a textured chignon with loose, face-framing pieces works at any age. To recreate the style, apply a coat of volumizer (from roots to ends) to blow-dried hair. Using a paddle brush, gently smooth the hairline and brush strands upward to create lift. Next, tease the crown and vertical sections on the sides, then pull strands back as if you are creating a low ponytail. While holding hair with one hand, begin twisting the “pony” up and to the left with your other hand. Continue until all of your hair is tightly wound. Fold the ends into the newly formed chignon and secure with pins. Allow short layers to fall, but tuck longer pieces into the updo.

First Look: Ruffian’s Collection for MAC!

May 17, 2012 @ 4:30 pm

Cult favorite New York clothing line Ruffian is known as much for their coveted fashion—Kirsten Dunst, Cate Blanchett, and Kate Moss are fans—as for the beauty looks born on their runway. Now that Ruffian Red is an established go-to crimson lip color, designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais are expanding to nails. They’ve collaborated with MAC to develop a collection of super-chic press-ons in varying takes on the signature Ruffian half-moon manicure. “Every season Claude and I start with the manicure idea and it really forms the collection,” Wolk told InStyle.com exclusively. “Ruffian is always about a story, about a movie, about a film. It’s cinematic.” The kits of 24 press-on nails are self-adhesive and will be available for a limited time on maccosmetics.com starting on June 18th. “There is something so Ruffian about the ephemeral, that it will last just for a moment,” said Wolk. View the entire collection in the gallery.

Pixie Cuts We Love: Our Top Ten

We couldn’t help but notice that many of the most stylish ladies in Hollywood have been keeping it short and sweet when it comes to their hair. Actually, make that short and sexy. Pixies seem to be the go-to style for these A-listers, including Halle Berry and Ashlee Simpson (top left).  Actresses Cate Blanchett and Emma Watson (bottom left) also dared to chop off their locks, leaving them with less hair but all the more wow factor.
