First Look: Ruffian’s Collection for MAC!

May 17, 2012 @ 4:30 pm

Cult favorite New York clothing line Ruffian is known as much for their coveted fashion—Kirsten Dunst, Cate Blanchett, and Kate Moss are fans—as for the beauty looks born on their runway. Now that Ruffian Red is an established go-to crimson lip color, designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais are expanding to nails. They’ve collaborated with MAC to develop a collection of super-chic press-ons in varying takes on the signature Ruffian half-moon manicure. “Every season Claude and I start with the manicure idea and it really forms the collection,” Wolk told InStyle.com exclusively. “Ruffian is always about a story, about a movie, about a film. It’s cinematic.” The kits of 24 press-on nails are self-adhesive and will be available for a limited time on maccosmetics.com starting on June 18th. “There is something so Ruffian about the ephemeral, that it will last just for a moment,” said Wolk. We couldn’t help but notice that many of the most stylish ladies in Hollywood have been keeping it short and sweet when it comes to their hair. Actually, make that short and sexy. Pixies seem to be the go-to style for these A-listers, including Halle Berry and Ashlee Simpson (top left).  Actresses Cate Blanchett and Emma Watson (bottom left) also dared to chop off their locks, leaving them with less hair but all the more wow factor. Cate Blanchett’s Top Redhead Movie Moments

Apr 8, 2011 @ 6:00 pm

Cate Blanchett‘s new film Hanna hits theaters today, and we’re excited to see her play Marissa Wiegler—a tenacious intelligence officer after young assassin Hanna (Saoirse Ronan). To match her character’s fiery personality, Blanchett wears an auburn wig for the movie. “I’ve actually been a redhead quite a few times in film, and it was really important to find a shade that worked with my skin tone,” the actress told InStyle exclusively. “In Hanna, going red was director Joe Wright’s idea, but I decided the cut of the wig.” Blanchett has rocked red hair off-screen, but when we asked her if she’d ever dye it again, she told us, “Probably not for a while. I like being blond, but it’s great being able to try different looks out in films.” Click through our gallery to see Cate Blanchett’s top redhead moments!

Cate Blanchett Wears Giorgio Armani in Hanna

Apr 8, 2011 @ 1:30 pm

Cate Blanchett’s latest film Hanna premieres today, and Giorgio Armani outfitted the star in a series of sleek suits for the thriller. Blanchett, who wore a red wig for the role, stars as intelligence operative Marissa Wiegler, a woman on a mission to chase down 16-year-old assassin Hanna, played by Saoirse Ronan. Armani settled on tough-girl tailoring mixed with softer elements, like a green cashmere overcoat, to represent Blanchett’s character. “Working with Cate Blanchett, on and off the screen, has always been a highlight for me,” Armani noted. “She embodies the perfect combination of consummate actor and world-class fashion icon.” Click through to see Blanchett’s Hanna looks, and see some of Armani’s costume sketches.

Cate Blanchett’s 2011 Oscars Dress: ‘If People Get It, They Get It’

Apr 6, 2011 @ 1:30 pm

Cate Blanchett’s 2011 Oscars dress—a couture lilac gown by Givenchy—was one of the most fashion-forward looks of the evening, and Blanchett had no qualms wearing something so avant garde, despite the hit-or-miss reaction from fans after her appearance. “People get so worried about dressing for other people, but you’ve got to wear what you like,” Blanchett told InStyle this week while promoting her new film Hanna. “If people get it, they get it. If they don’t, then it doesn’t matter. There are so few houses that can afford to do couture, and since the red carpet is such a wonderful showcase, we should be celebrating that.” So what did she love most about the dress? “It was so architectural, and the breast piece is made all out of elastic,” she explained. “The color combination, I couldn’t believe it when I saw it in real life. I was tempted to wear it two ways, because if you take the top part off, it’s a really simple halter dress underneath. I thought the external piece was so unusual.” Does the transformational element mean we might see her in this again? “You could wear it again because it becomes a completely different dress, so, possibly,” she said.

Cate Blanchett stars in Hanna, out Friday, April 8th.
