Covering up completely on the red carpet runs the risk of looking too conservative, but flashing skin poses its obvious risqué set of problems. What’s a celebrity to do? Sheer gowns tastefully walk the line between sexy and reserved, revealing skin while remaining fully clothed. While the sheer concept is nothing new, we have noticed a recent surge of stars opting for the transparent cloth over its opaque counterpart. We really took note of the trend when Jennifer Lawrence made headlines hitting The Hunger Games: Catching Fire premiere in a sheer gray knit Christian Dior Couture gown. Then, in true Country Music Awards spirit, Carrie Underwood glammed it up in a sheer Ralph & Russo Couture number dotted with all-over crystal embellishments. More recently, Pippa Middleton embraced—and perfected—the effect to a (royal) tee. And as a relative to royalty, Middleton did her due diligence, keeping her look sophisticated and utterly refined by wearing a nude slip underneath to prevent accidental slip-ups. From overtly see-through to subtly transparent, it’s clear that sheer is in.
Last night at the 47th Annual Country Music Association Awards, host Carrie Underwood changed looks a staggering 10 times! The singer brought an array of designer outfits to the stage at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, and started the night off in a Ralph & Russo Couture dusky-pink sheer gown covered in delicate rose-gold floral-and-crystal embellishments on the red carpet. From navy embroidered Badgley Mischka pants and a white crop top, to a show-stopping Christian Siriano ruffly pink floral gown, she dazzled during her hosting duties. Carrie’s choices — all paired with her signature wavy locks — spanned the style spectrum. Though Carrie didn’t top last year’s record-breaking 12 outfit changes, her other 2013 looks (including a silver Grecian-inspired Talbot Runhof gown, a tuxedo romper and a Georges Chakra mod pink, orange, and black stomach-baring trapeze dress) certainly hit the mark!
Pink, Taylor, Rihanna, and Carrie, oh my! Four of the music industry’s biggest female stars have received nominations for the 2013 American Music Awards, and it’s Taylor Swift (who just so happens to be InStyle‘s November cover girl) who leads the pack of women with the most nominations with five — yes five — noms this year. Aside from the awards themselves, we’re looking forward to seeing what these four ladies will wear to wow us on the red carpet like they usually do. Judging by past AMA looks, we’re confident they won’t disappoint! At last year’s award show, we loved Swift’s floral embroidered Zuhair Murad frock, which was a nice departure from the 23-year-old’s oft-favored long gowns. Fellow country star and this year’s Favorite Female Country Artist nominee Carrie Underwood also wore an embroidered dress that year, but she went with a bold color, choosing an electric purple Abed Mahfouz. Pink, who is nominated in two categories this year, kept her look at last year’s awards demur, walking the carpet in a bronze Catherine Deane gown featuring a laser-cut bodice. And last but certainly not least, Rihanna — who trails Taylor by one nomination — has been absent from the awards show for the past two years, but it’s hard to forget her stunning scarlet sheer and floral embroidered Elie Saab gown at the 2010 awards. For the full list of nominees, visit theamas.com (where you can also vote for your favorite artist) and catch the 2013 American Music Awards November 24, airing live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.

Country’s biggest night is around the corner and just today, the Country Music Association released the full list of the 2013 nominees for the 47th annual Country Music Awards Awards. Keeping with tradition, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood will be upholding their posts as the evening’s hosts for the sixth year in a row at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville (we can’t help but wonder how many dresses Underwood will change into this year!). Among the nominees, Taylor Swift and newcomer Kacey Musgraves lead the list with six nominations each, while Swift is the only woman nominated for the Entertainer of the Year award (she won twice before) proving that yes, girls do run the world! Scroll down to see the full list of nominees—including Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert, and more—and tune in on November 6th when the CMAs air live on ABC.
Now here’s a collaboration that hits all the right notes — Carrie Underwood has teamed up with Nicole by OPI to develop a line of nail polishes! While the brand previously released collections with Selena Gomez and the cast of Modern Family, respectively, Underwood is the first star to get a custom lacquer blended especially for her. “This is the first time Nicole by OPI has ever designed a signature shade for one of our celebrity partners,” OPI’s executive VP and artistic director Suzi Weiss-Fischmann said of the aptly-named Carrie-d Away hue, a textured gold. “In working closely with Carrie, we came up with 14 nail lacquers that truly encapsulate her soulful spirit and showcase different facets of her personality.” Underwood is no stranger to bold manicure choices — she added a fun statement nail to her classic red manicure at the Grammy Awards this year — so we’re excited to see the striking hues she has in store. The line will be available in January of 2014, but stay tuned to see more previews closer to the launch date!

Country Music Charity Auction: Bid on Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton’s Looks to Raise Money for OklahomaAug 9, 2013 @ 10:00 am
Starting today, multiple country stars are auctioning off outfits they wore to special events to charity. Corri McFadden, founder of the luxury consignment service eDrop-Off, and Trish Townsend, stylist to Carrie Underwood and Blake Shelton, came up with the idea to raise money to help people affected by the tornadoes in Oklahoma. “My heart was crushed for those families,” Townsend told InStyle.com. “When I asked friends in Nashville for donations, they were so generous. It just shows how fashion can really make a difference.” You can bid for a chance to own Carrie Underwood’s 2013 CMT Awards gown by Georges Chakra, Miranda Lambert’s 2013 ACM dress by Jovani, Blake Shelton’s outfit from The Voice blind auditions, plus items from Brad Paisley, Jason Aldean and the Rascal Flatts. Go to shopedropoff.com starting today through August 18 to bid — 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross to rebuild Oklahoma.

The hairstyles at last night’s CMT Awards challenged country music’s reputation for over-coiffed updos. Rather, Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert, Kristen Bell, and Carrie Underwood all strode into the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville with effortless down styles that packed a dose of surfer girl appeal. While Underwood and Lambert opted for defined waves, Swift and Bell went the natural route with soft, tousled looks. The easiest way to get the look is to spritz a texturizer or beach-waving spray onto damp strands, then let your hair air-dry to enhance your own texture. We love Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Spray ($25; bumbleandbumble.com), which became such a cult favorite that the brand launched a coordinating shampoo and conditioner ($25 and $24; bumbleandbumble.com). If you prefer a more defined wave, loosely wrap sections of hair in alternating directions around a curling iron, then wait until each area is completely cool before you give your strands a tousle.
