“Ain’t no mountain high enough!” Diana Ross sang it, and it’s still true, especially for ESosa, the Tony Award-nominated costume designer behind the costumes of the new Broadway show, Motown: The Musicalwhich opened at New York’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre this month. His job was to tackle the mountain of a task to wardrobe a time when Motown reigned supreme. The show is inspired by the true story of how Berry Gordy, Jr. founded Motown Records and revolutionized music, which means the show’s lead characters Berry Gordy (Brandon Victor Dixon), Smokey Robinson (Charl Brown), Marvin Gaye (Bryan Terrell Clark), and most notably, Gordy’s love interest, the one-and-only Diana Ross (Valisia LeKae) belt out 59 of Motown Records’ greatest hits, from The Jackson 5′s “ABC” to Robinson’s “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me.” While the set is minimal overall, it does allow for the glizty stage looks worn by Diana Ross and The Supremes to shine—thanks to ESosa’s partnership with Swarovski, 247,000 crystals illuminate the designs (see the exclusive sketches above). “The costumes worn by Valisia LeKae in the role of Diana allow her to truly sparkle, so much so that audiences will feel they are actually seeing and hearing one of Motown’s musical legends,” ESosa said. Custom designs for a true diva—we wouldn’t expect anything less. For tickets, visit motownthemusical.com.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s on Broadway: How Costume Designer Colleen Atwood Created the New Holly Golightly

Mar 20, 2013 @ 5:49 pm

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is opening on Broadway tonight—and if you’re thinking Audrey Hepburn and lots of little black Givenchy dresses, think again. Performed for the first time on the stage, Breakfast the play takes more of its inspiration from Truman Capote’s tragic novella than the romantic blockbuster that followed. And yet, thanks to Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (of Chicago and Alice in Wonderland fame), this production is just as chic, with good-time girl Holly Golightly (Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke) in scarlet frocks, retro chapeaus, and, yes, one perfect LBD. Read our exclusive interview with Atwood, in which she talks about Emilia, Audrey, and styling your own little black dress like Holly, after the jump. More

Breakfast at Tiffany’s Heads to Broadway: Emilia Clarke to Star as Holly Golightly

Oct 11, 2012 @ 10:21 am

Game of Thrones’s Emilia Clarke is headed to Broadway! The actress has been tapped to star as Holly Golightly in Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a role unforgettably portrayed by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film. Playwright Richard Greenberg adapted the story for the stage, and said in a press release that he aims to “return to the original setting of the novella, which is the New York of the Second World War, as well as to resume its tone—still stylish and romantic, yes, but rougher-edged and more candid than people generally remember.” We look forward to seeing Daenerys don the iconic Tiffany’s tiara and necklace when the production opens on Broadway in February 2013.
