Gwyneth Paltrow’s New Cookbook, It’s All Good: A Defense

Apr 4, 2013 @ 3:15 pm

Whenever InStyle cover girl Gwyneth Paltrow does something, there’s a good portion of the population in disagreement (see: here and here). And with the launch of her new cookbook, It’s All Good: Delicious, Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look and Feel Great, the headlines are no different. So why all the negativity? Because in this 304-page cookbook, released this week, Paltrow advocates an elimination diet, in which one avoids coffee, alcohol, dairy, eggs, sugar, shellfish, deepwater fish, potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, corn, wheat, meat, and soy—not just for a period of time, but for the rest of one’s life. Paltrow admits that the diet, recommended by Dr. Alejandro Junger (of Clean diet fame), was overwhelming at first, and a blow for the self-professed foodie. Still, she says, the end result was life-changing, and spawned the idea for this cookbook, which she co-wrote with Julia Turshen, a food writer and private chef. Paltrow readily admits that the lifestyle she advocates in this book isn’t easy. “The rest of my life? Without Parmesan cheese and fried zucchini and pasta and baguettes and Pinor Noir?” she writes. “That was not going to happen, let’s face it. However, could it become my baseline?. Could I lean toward it more? I decided I could.” Without saying so, it sounds like Paltrow is following the old 80/20 rule when it comes to food: eating healthy 80% of the time so you can indulge the other 20%. That certainly sounds like a balanced and realistic approach to eating to us! And let’s face it: if any diet can help us all look as good as Paltrow does at age 40, it’s worth a shot. Click here to snag a copy of the book for yourself, and share your thoughts in the comments!

Did You Know That Simon Doonan Is Writing a New Book? Here Are the Details!

Mar 28, 2013 @ 10:45 am

Simon Doonan, the creative ambassador for Barneys New York, is one of fashion’s most outspoken (and hilarious) voices. (Doonan is so funny that Alexander Wang even chose him to star in his most recent, very tongue-in-cheek ad campaign.) He has put his quick wit to the white page in the form of several books, like Gay Men Don’t Get Fat, and he recently told InStyle.com that his next book, The Asylum, will be released this September. “I’ve been privileged to be in fashion from when it was a tiny little thing that was just a prerogative of rich women to when it became the insane, global obsession that it is today,” Doonan told InStyle.com at Barneys’ Celebration of 60 Years of Chloé. “The book has humorous anecdotes, hopefully, from my 40 years in fashion. It became bigger than anyone could have ever predicted. You don’t know how little it was! I mean, it was a very minor thing. Fashion Week was like a trade show.” How things have changed—keep an eye on penguingroup.com to find out more about The Asylum, and pick up a copy when it comes out September 3.

Inside InStyle‘s February issue, we spoke to Jessica Alba about starting her eco-friendly family brand, The Honest Company—and now, her first Honest book is on sale to go with it. The Honest Life: Living Naturally and True to You is the actress’s tip-filled guide to all the lessons she’s learned along the way to becoming an environmental entrepreneur, from when she started creating “high-performance and safe” products to when she lobbied Congress to support the Safe Chemicals Act. “I’m a mom on the go, and I have to do a million things,” said the actress, who has two daughters, 4-year-old Honor and 1-year-old Haven (pictured). “I’m not going to sit there and read every single ingredient on every single package I buy, and I don’t think other parents are either. Creating this company was something I had to do.” And sharing her experience is, too! To learn more about Alba’s natural way of living, pick up The Honest Life for $16 at barnesandnoble.com.

The photography team of Markus Klinko and Indrani Pal-Chaudhuri know what it takes to make an icon—so they rounded up a retrospective of their most memorable images, and put them in their new book Icons: The Celebrity Exposures of Markus + Indrani ($25, Running Press, out this month). “It’s not just fame,” French-Hungarian photographer Markus Klinko told InStyle.com of what it takes to make an icon. “There’s definitely the ability to create a timeless presence—that’s the secret of the iconic photo or the iconic person. Like a good wine, with time it becomes something else.” And if you look at the pair’s images, their subjects all fit the bill: Lady Gaga, Kate Winslet, Diane Kruger, Eva Mendes, and Beyoncé posed for the duo for images that, in Klinko’s words, “border the line between fantasy and reality.” Click through the gallery to learn more about collaborating with the Icons from Markus, and shop the book (which honors the duo’s 18th anniversary of working together) on amazon.com.

Kesha’s Book My Crazy Beautiful Life: Exclusive Details!

Ke$ha is 25, and she already has a memoir! Available today, My Crazy Beautiful Life (Simon & Schuster, $23) tells the story of how she became the glitter-covered wild-child figure she is today. “I wanted to make a scrapbook for my fans, and share this crazy story with the people who have made it all possible,” she told InStyle.com. In turn, the 192 pages show a behind-the-scenes look at what makes the at-times risque singer (who just this morning performed on the Today show) “tik-tok,” with a mix of backstage photography and first-person anecdotes. It also shows her growth as a woman. “I try to keep everyone on their toes, but I’m certainly embracing a bit more femininity in my style,” she told InStyle.com. That said, she’s not quieting her wild ways any time soon—her current style icon is Willy Wonka, and she says she normally takes “an entire semi just full of glitter” on tour with her. Well, she certainly keeps it interesting! Click here to pick up her book, available starting today, and keep an eye out for her new albume Warrior, in stores December 4th.
