Costume Designer Awards Red Carpet: Davis, Berry, More!

Feb 23, 2011 @ 11:01 am

Kristin Davis knows who to thank for her great wardrobe on the big screen—her costume designer. Davis was among many who honored the profession last night at the 13th Annual Costume Designer Awards in Beverly Hills. “I love costume designers—I’ve had more in-depth conversations with my costume designer about my character than I have with my director,” Davis (in Oscar de la Renta) told the crowd, which also included Demi Moore, Halle Berry and Claire Danes, as well as costume designers Lou Eyrich (Glee), Janie Bryant (Mad Men), Amy Westcott (Black Swan), Colleen Atwood (Alice in Wonderland) and Julie Weiss (Secretariat). “Costumes truly make it possible for us to feel like a character. As soon as we put on the clothes, we know that we’ve done our job.” See more celebrities at the Costume Designer Awards the gallery.

Natalie Portman’s Engagement Ring: The Designer Details!

Jan 24, 2011 @ 5:46 pm

What makes Natalie Portman’s engagement ring so special isn’t just who gave it to her, but also who designed it and how it was made. Jeweler designer Jamie Wolf (inset), whose creations have also adorned Jessica Biel, Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway, created the custom handmade ring with choreographer Benjamin Millepied, Portman’s now-fiancé. “Ben was exceptionally thoughtful and dedicated and patient to make sure we had everything right,” Wolf told InStyle, who as a former dancer for the New York City Ballet, has been friends with Millepied for over 15 years. (He even encouraged Wolf to audition as a company dancer for Black Swan, and she was cast film!) “We wanted everything about the ring to speak to things that are important to Natalie.” Therefore, in alignment with Portman’s ecofriendly and vegan ideals, the stone is an antique (round old mine cut diamond), the pave diamonds are certified as conflict-free, meaning no one was hurt or treated unfairly in the mining of the diamonds, and the platinum is recycled metal. “It was a lot of fun to work with him, he’s such a great guy and it’s such a great piece of jewelry,” Wolf said. “It speaks to my work and my taste on a personal level. I was really proud of how it turned out. It’s gorgeous.”

Though the Golden Globes are but a memory and the Oscars aren’t until February 27, there are plenty of red carpet events to look forward to in the meantime, including the BAFTA Awards in London. The nominations for the February 13 ceremony, considered by many to be the British equivalent of the Oscars, were announced this morning. Black Swan is a top contender; nominated for Best Film, Best Costume Design, and Best Hair and Makeup, while Golden Globe winner Natalie Portman garnered another Best Actress nod. We’re excited to see that Hailee Steinfeld also landed in the best leading actress category for True Grit, a first for the 14-year-old. And Easy A‘s Emma Stone is nominated for the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award, the only category decided on by a public online vote. (However, only U.K. residents are eligible.)
