CFDA Awards 2013: Why Miranda Kerr Really Chose Her Proenza Schouler Dress

Jun 4, 2013 @ 4:55 pm

Now here’s what we call fashion fate! Miranda Kerr knows a thing or two about picking a winning outfit, and last night at the CFDA Awards, the model hit the red carpet in a Proenza Schouler ensemble only moments before the label designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez were awarded Womenswear Designer of the Year. At an event announcing her partnership with Gillette Venus, we just had to ask why she chose the number, and her reaction to the big win. “I loved the colors, I loved the shape, and it just felt good!” she told InStyle.com exclusively. “I thought it was something a little different, and I liked how the silhouette was really fun.” This marks the third year Proenza Schouler won the award, and Kerr thinks the title is more fitting than ever for the duo. “I really feel like they are inspiring, creative people, and it was wonderful that they were recognized for that,” she added. “It was a very supportive environment. Everyone in the industry was recognizing the hard work their peers have put in, and it was a fun night, too!”

Congratulations, fashion superstars! The fashion industry joined together at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City last night for the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, the evening when fashion’s famous faces honor their peers. Among the highlights at this year’s CFDA Awards: Vera Wang received the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez walked away with the coveted Womenswear Designer of the Year Award, and Hillary Rodham Clinton honored her pal Oscar de la Renta with the Founders Award for making a mark on fashion. “Simply put, he is an American icon,” Clinton said in her remarks. “His style and personality have permeated our culture and shaped the industry for decades. His name alone evokes elegance and timeless beauty, and his designs give each of us a chance like we’re special too.” What a compliment! Click through the gallery to see the full list of winners.

InStyle.com caught up with costume designer Daniel Lawson, shown, to get the full breakdown of last night’s looks. “I wanted to start off the season with something unexpected for her, which is why I put her in bright colors,” he said of the Proenza Schouler jade jacket and Akris red suit. “It’s something fresh and vibrant that we never did before, and it tells the viewers, ‘You better keep watching, because you don’t know what’s coming your way!’” Get all the details on this season’s looks in the gallery, and follow Lawson @GoodWifeFashion for the latest updates.

Runway Looks We Love: Proenza Schouler

Sep 13, 2012 @ 6:20 pm

Proenza Schouler’s bold spring collection featured vibrant colors and perforated leather, from zip-front dresses and patchwork skirts to structured coats and lipstick bright jackets. In an artful twist, the designers took digital photography found online—such as a poolside scene—and turned it into a modern, wearable dress (right), which we loved. As for the accessories, the statement shoe of the season is the label’s knee-high cutout boots, while the equally chic (and sure to be highly-coveted) bags were emblazoned with metallic hardware and more of those digitally-sourced showstoppers. See our favorite looks in the gallery!
