The music industry gathered in Los Angeles for a weekend filled with festivities in honor of the 2013 BET Awards! White House Down co-stars Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum helped kick-off the celebrations at the three-day BET Experience concert at the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles on Friday. Janelle Monae and Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child kept the festivities going at the second day of L.A. Live where they chatted in a live broadcast at the Radio Remote Room, and for Sunday’s main event Gabrielle Union (in Monika Chiang) and boyfriend NBA star Dwyane Wade cozied up in the audience as they waited for the stars like Robin Thicke, Nicki Minaj, Justin Timberlake, and more to take the stage at the Nokia Theatre. When in doubt, opt for a red lip! That’s what Gabby Douglas did at the 2013 BET Awards, where she topped off her glamorous gown by Sherri Hill with a swipe of true crimson lipstick. We loved how it tied her look together while giving off a classic Old Hollywood vibe, so we just had to find out the exact shade she used. “I’m wearing Ruby Woo by MAC,” Douglas told InStyle. While many opt to layer on the lip liner before sweeping on such a bold color, Douglas tried her hand at an easier method. “I apply only on the bottom lip and dab a little on the top,” she added. “You don’t want it to be too much and get all over the place.” Great tip! Shop the color for $15 at maccosmetics.com.

Now that’s one way to kick off the 2013 BET Awards on a stylish note! This weekend, stars including Ashanti, NeNe Leakes and Jordin Sparks gathered at Milk Studios in Los Angeles to gear up for this year’s ceremony. Hosted by Debra L. Lee, the chairman and CEO of BET networks, guests mingled during the cocktail hour before settling into the elegant formal dining room, where the iconic Sheila E. took the stage for a surprise performance. Sparks in particular was excited, as it was her first time to attend the party. “Yes, I’m a newbie! I have no idea what to expect, but I’m excited,” she told us before heading inside. “I have to make sure I have a hair tie, because my hair will be curly by the end of the night if I’m dancing.” And there was definitely dancing! The 2013 BET Awards were a big night for music, and an even bigger night for fashion! To kick off the stylish red carpet, the ever-adorable Quvenzhane Wallis paired her frilly printed dress with her trademark puppy purse, while Jordin Sparks, Nicki Minaj, and Gabrielle Union lined the venue in couture offerings. Mariah Carey and Justin Timberlake each took the stage later in the night to give stellar performances, and in preparation for the big event, Sparks went for a spontaneous color change. “I changed my hair last night — I literally dyed it last night with this color,” she told InStyle on her caramel highlights. “I really wanted a change and needed the carpet to push me to do it.” That’s the spirit! Before last night’s BET Awards in Los Angeles, the network’s CEO Debra Lee teamed up with Cedric the Entertainer to host the sixth annual “PRE” exclusive dinner on Saturday night. “Debra Lee throws a great party,” said Michelle Williams (in BCBG Max Azria), who hung out with R&B singer Kenny Lattimore at the event. Selita Ebanks (in Olcay Gulsen) stayed close to singer Estelle, while Ciara stopped by in a Willow dress and Louboutin shoes, which didn’t last long. “I will kick my shoes off in a heartbeat!” she told us—poor Loubs!—before hitting the dance floor with fellow guests Tatyana Ali, La La Vasquez-Anthony, and Eddie Murphy.
