Does art really imitate life? In Jennifer Lawrence‘s case, yes! Pre-pixie cut, the star famously wore intricate braided hairstyles that mirrored her on-screen plait in her role as Katniss Everdeen, and we were left wanting to recreate each of the delicate looks on our own. The Katniss effect also caught on in Hollywood, with one A-lister after the next hitting the red carpet in a pretty twist that would look right at home among Panem’s avant-garde style choices. To celebrate the release of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, we rounded up our favorite celebrity braids, all of which would do District 12′s boldest resident proud. MAC’s Masterclass Brushes ($25 to $42; maccosmetics.com) may resemble the toothbrush in your bathroom, but boast more benefits for your makeup bag than your dental regimen. The innovative shapes allow for multiple uses, and claim a quick, seamless application. We asked InStyle.com Senior Beauty Editor Selene Milano to see how the Oval 6 brush fared for her complexion, while our Assistant Editor Marianne Mychaskiw tried out the Oval 3 and Linear 1 brushes on her eyes. Keep reading to see what they thought!
SELENE’S TAKE ON THE FACE BRUSH: “I used the Oval 6 brush with a rosy blush on the apples of my cheeks. Usually I have to wait for my foundation and concealer to fully set before applying powder blush, but this time I went for it right away. It smoothed on the color seamlessly, giving my face a much more natural effect. That, plus the bonus of shaving 5 minutes off of my morning routine—I’m a convert!”
MARIANNE’S TAKE ON THE EYE BRUSHES: “I wasn’t quite sure how to use the Oval 3 and Linear 1 brushes at first, but once I got the hang of it, my eye makeup was perfectly applied in five seconds flat — and not because of my blending skills. Since the Oval 3 brush perfectly covered my lids, it kept the shimmer from my eye shadow from falling onto my face, and the ultra-fine Linear 1 made applying gel eyeliner a lot easier. Its narrow shape allows you to press the product across your lash line to ensure even coverage, and also works wonders at filling in brows.”
The wait is almost over — Catching Fire rolls out to theaters nationwide tomorrow, with midnight screenings starting in mere hours! But before you line up for tickets, consider accenting your Katniss ensemble with some ultra-hot nail art. We painted up four fun manicures inspired by the film, and while they’re not as intense as Effie’s embellished talons, they’re an easy, stylish way to give your look a touch of fire. See each manicure in our gallery now, with step-by-step instructions on how to nail all four effects.
Yesterday in Washington D.C., Oprah Winfrey was one of 16 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented by President Barack Obama — a momentous occasion and accomplishment for anyone, not just the queen of daytime TV. Why so significant? It’s the highest civilian honor in the United States, recognizing people who have contributed to the country in areas like national security, world peace, or culture. Oprah’s fellow recipients included former President Bill Clinton, feminist icon Gloria Steinam, and storied country music singer Loretta Lynn.
But just as we laud Oprah for her amazing achievement, we also give two thumbs up to her hairstylist, Andre Walker, for her fantastic blowout at the event. We asked him how the chic style came together: “For a special, historic event like this, Oprah and I prefer a classic look,” he told InStyle.com. “Every woman should remember that special occasions will be photographed, and years later, it is better to look timeless rather than trendy in the photos. This style is Oprah’s curly hair shampooed, conditioned, and blown straight with my Gold System,” a hair care system for naturally kinky hair.
You can get the look at home using Walker’s system, or a combination of store-bought products. Because heat styling can take a toll on your strands, we recommend using a hydrating deep conditioner with a thermal protectant spray before picking up the dryer. If a DIY blowout ends up being more like an intense workout for your arms, streamline the process by rough-drying your hair until 75 percent of the water is removed, then go back and smooth over individual areas with a round brush, which helps you achieve that coveted curl. This way, you’ll be able to focus on perfecting the look, rather than getting your strands dry enough to hold a curl. Need more guidance on achieving the look on your own? Follow these five steps to score a glam blowout at home.
Kiehl’s famed Creme de Corps body lotion is one of our go-to products all year long, and with the increasing chill to the air, an extra layer of the hydrating formula does the body good. In time for the holidays, the beauty brand is taking an extra step to do even more good by teaming up with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. By purchasing a jar of the Kiehl’s Creme de Corps whipped body butter, you can take a step to end childhood hunger in the United States — up to $100,000 from all net proceeds will benefit the No Kid Hungry cause, which provides additional meals to children in need. One jar provides 380 meals, and in addition to the amazing cause it benefits, we’re also loving the festive drawing adorning the lid by 11 year-old Sofie Shore, daughter of Share Our Strength’s co-founder Debbie Shore. Pick up the Creme de Corps whipped body butter, available in either grapefruit or coriander, for $38 at kiehls.com.
Parting doesn’t have to be such sweet sorrow! Pump up the edge this season by deepening your classic side part. “There’s nothing wishy-washy about the placement,” says Kahlana Barfield, InStyle’s Beauty Director. “It’s very deep starting from the middle to the end of the brow, heading straight back to the crown.” Experiment with Marni’s messier take on the classic staple, which gives off more of a laidback vibe. But if keeping it sleek is more your thing, try a tight chignon, as seen at Miu Miu.
To complement your new ‘do, celebrity makeup artist, Cyndle Komarovski, recommends a graphic cat-eye. “The line of the eye shadow will extend the line of the hair part, so it’s a really dramatic effect,” she says. For a step-by-step guide on achieving this look, check out our video above.
Rihanna has chopped her locks! Never one to shy away from a hair risk, the singer took to Instagram over the weekend to reveal her shorter cut with layered fringe. “Rihanna wanted something different, edgy, and fun, but simple at the same time,” Motions Celebrity Stylist Ursula Stephen told InStyle.com exclusively. “We don’t like neat or perfect hair — that balance of perfectly-imperfect has always been our thing.” Stephen has worked with the star for years, and duo has experimented with almost every style from a chic pixie to lengthy red strands. If Rihanna has you inspired to make a similar change, Stephen recommends paying extra attention to the little details. “The ends should be bumped tightly using a curling iron,” she added.
Another reason Lupita Nyong’O continues to be our style muse: She’s not afraid to break out an ultra-bright lipstick regardless of the season. The neon pink shade she wore to a GQ party in Los Angeles is officially the high-octane alternative to the classic red lip. Rather than picking up a solid, opaque hue, her makeup artist Nick Barose chose Giorgio Armani’s Lip Maestro in No. 504 ($32 at giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com), a lipstick-lacquer hybrid with buildable coverage. “A bold lip color like hot fuchsia pink is more wearable when you opt for a texture that isn’t too glossy or matte,” he told InStyle.com. “Try something more sheer, like a stain or lip lacquer.” Armani’s innovative formula dries to a slightly matte, velvety finish, and stays in place once applied so you won’t have to fuss over finding a matching lip liner — just be sure to clean up around the edges with concealer, or a pointed Q-Tip to cover any unexpected smudges.
