It’s official — the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos are going to the Super Bowl! While the boys on each team are surely training for the big event on February 2nd, we’re working out our nail art skills to show our support in the trendiest way possible. InStyle teamed up with MVP manicurist Madeline Poole, who has lacquered up the famous fingers of Rose Byrne, Kate Bosworth, and Ke$ha among many others, to create football-inspired manicures that are easy to try on yourself, and even easier to customize. “Just pick the two or three most dominant colors from the team’s jersey,” she advised. If you’re a nail art rookie, Poole recommends using the base color on all ten digits, and having one accent nail decked out in the design. “That way, you can focus on getting one nail perfect, since lines tend to be a little difficult,” she added. Scroll down to see Poole’s step-by-step tips on tackling each pattern now, then see more of her Super Bowl manicure ideas on page 70 of our February issue. More
Zooey Deschanel‘s prep for the Golden Globes was — in the star’s own words — “very smooth.”
“Yeah, it was very smooth,” she told us on the red carpet. “Got out of the door really fast. I had some friends come over and we had my dogs, and it was fun.”
“Fun” is just one way to describe the Golden Globe-nominated actress’s nail art at the show, which has become as much a part of her signature look as her bangs. This year, nail artist Tom Bachik used L’Oreal polish to create a sweet, fun floral design. Bachik told us he drew inspiration from Deschanel’s Oscar de la Renta gown, which had architectural beading at the top and splashes of sparkle throughout the skirt. The duo wanted to create a nail look that had a vintage, Old Hollywood feel that would offset the structured elements of the dress, and decided on a ’60s-inspired floral motif. The result was a glamorous 3D design with soft tones and splashes of metallic gold.
Here’s the step-by-step straight from Bachik on how to get the look:
Despite the fact that glitter polish can be a challenge to take off, we love a little sparkle on our manis, especially when it’s gloomy outside. So we rounded up the nine hues we’re loving this winter, along with one innovative fix to the lengthy removal process. From blinged-out glitters that command attention, to subtle shimmer that won’t appear juvenile, we have you — and all 10 of your digits — covered this year.

The wait is almost over — Catching Fire rolls out to theaters nationwide tomorrow, with midnight screenings starting in mere hours! But before you line up for tickets, consider accenting your Katniss ensemble with some ultra-hot nail art. We painted up four fun manicures inspired by the film, and while they’re not as intense as Effie’s embellished talons, they’re an easy, stylish way to give your look a touch of fire. See each manicure in our gallery now, with step-by-step instructions on how to nail all four effects.
Did too many gel manicures leave your nails dry and brittle? Never fear — we have you covered! Too much experimentation with heavy-duty lacquers can leave your nails damaged and prone to breakage, so we spoke to top New York City dermatologists to find out how you can nurse them back to top form. Whether you hit the salon once a week or once a season, you can keep nails super-tough and snag-free with these handy pointers. Click the photo to see how you can keep your digits healthy in your 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond!

Being Bad Never Looked This Good! Your Favorite Disney Villains Get a Line of Makeup, Nail Polish, and MoreOct 21, 2013 @ 7:30 am
Who says the princesses get to have all the fun? While the protagonists in Disney’s fairytales are the ones to wear the gown and win the prince’s heart, the villains are usually the ones who bring on the real glamour with dramatic eyes, fluttery lashes, and a mean red lip. Just in time for Halloween, Disney has teamed up with Walgreens to create makeup sets inspired by villainesses like Snow White‘s Evil Queen, 101 Dalmations‘ Cruella DeVil, Sleeping Beauty‘s Maleficent, and Ursula from The Little Mermaid! The collection includes cosmetic bags, nail art kits, faux lashes, and palettes, each perfect for channeling your inner outlaw. Plus, if you’re in the Chicago area tomorrow, you’ll be able to get a villain makeover of your own! Makeup artists and nail technicians will be stationed at the 151 N. State st. Walgreens from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. CST, where they’ll be demonstrating looks on attendees. The event heads to Los Angeles on Friday, so be sure to stop by the 1501 Vine st. Walgreens between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. PST.
This isn’t the first time Disney’s bad girls have been beauty muses — M.A.C. launched a limited-edition makeup range inspired by the villains back in 2010, and last year, Disney and E.L.F. Cosmetics each paid beautiful homages to the miscreants. Click the photo to browse the collection, and find the products, priced from $8 to $10, at Walgreens stores nationwide today.
