Happy 40th birthday, Eva Mendes. The gorgeous actress is an in-demand leading lady who’s co-starred with some of Hollywood’s hottest men—Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling, to name a few. And, of course, Mendes’ romance with Ryan sizzled off-screen as well: The pair have been dating for over two years and Gosling directed her in the upcoming thriller How to Catch a Monster.
Mendes is intent on using her celebrity to spotlight worthy causes, like her work with The Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit organization that provides legal representation to defendants and prisoners who have been denied fair and just treatment in the legal system—including kids who’ve been tried as adults.
The Cuban-American actress is also a coveted spokesperson: She’s the face of Vogue Eyewear, the cover girl for beauty site Violet Grey, and the spokesperson for Thierry Mugler’s Angel perfume. Mendes also designed her first capsule collection—ranging from vintage-style coats to vintage coats to costume jewelry—for New York & Company. To celebrate Mendes’ milestone birthday, see her best beauty looks through the years.
This spring, your tried-and-true smoky eye is getting a heavy metal twist! Gilded accents were hot all over the spring runways, with the pretty peepers at Gucci and Jason Wu ranking at the top as our favorite (and most wearable!) looks. “Gold is the new neutral, and it’s more interesting and has more life than beige or taupe,” says InStyle beauty director Kahlana Barfield in the above video. The metallic eye couldn’t be easier to master at home — all you need to recreate it is your favorite 24-Karat shadow, a brown liner pencil, a rich bronze hue, and a soft blending brush. “I think a gold smoky eye is far more interesting than a traditional black or grey smoky eye, and it’s a great neutral, so anyone can pull it off,” she adds. Find out exactly how to bring the runway effect to your everyday routine by watching the video above, then get more makeup inspiration by clicking through our gallery!
The perfect beauty complement to the Oscars red carpet? A red lip, of course! For the 86th Annual Academy Awards stars like Emma Watson, Anna Kendrick, and Naomi Watts reminded all of us why the crimson lip is such a classic look — it works on everybody, and adds a touch of Old Hollywood glamour to even the most-modern ensembles. “We wanted to make a statement with the makeup, and show a more playful side while still keeping true to her classic beauty,” says Kendrick’s makeup artist Sara Glick, who used Dior’s Fluid Stick in Open Me ($35; dior.com starting March 15) on the star. “I wanted her to stop the show by surprising everyone with a bright lip.” Mission accomplished!
If you want to follow in each stars’ lead, line your lips with a nude pencil rather than searching for an exact match. Many red lip liners can appear darker than your lipstick and create the dreaded stenciled effect, but a nude pencil will blend in with your natural lip color and provide a flat base for the hue to adhere. When working with statement lipsticks, make sure to apply the color using a lip brush to create the most-precise shape possible, then clean up around the edges with a concealer that matches your skin color to hide any unexpected smudges.

While the glamorous gowns lining the venue were the main focus at last night’s Oscars red carpet, the elegant beauty looks complementing each ensemble certainly didn’t go unnoticed. To mirror the princess feeling of her Prada gown, first-time Oscar winner and belle of the ball Lupita Nyong’o added a diamond-studded Fred Leighton headband to her cute pixie, which she complemented with a pop-of-color lip. Charlize Theron, on the other hand, played up her eyes, opting for a Twiggy-inspired white liner and lush lashes, while Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett paired her soft retro curls with a luminous complexion. But they aren’t the only stars who won big in the beauty department — after watching the entire ceremony and taking notes on our favorites, we rounded up the prettiest makeup and most-elegant hairstyles of the night, along with tips from the pros who created each look. It’s no secret that Lupita Nyong’o was the darling of last night’s Academy Awards — from her gorgeous Prada gown to her touching acceptance speech for her Best Supporting Actress Oscar, just about everything the star did began trending in 140 characters or less and only moments after her Fred Leighton headband gained its own Twitter account, the star also managed to get the #LupitasLipBalm hashtag buzzing on everyone’s news feeds.
As Ellen DeGeneres was taking up funds for an impromptu pizza party in the middle of the ceremony — using Pharrell’s now-infamous hat as the collection plate, of course — Nyong’o contributed her tube of Clarins HydraQuench Lip Balm. “Lupita’s lip balm! That’s worth something,” the host joked as she pocketed the product. The nourishing formula has long been a favorite of ours, especially in the chilly winter months, as the hydrating shea butter and rice oil extract each boast serious benefits for your pout. We’re not sure if DeGeneres plans to keep Lupita’s lip balm for herself or list it on eBay — we’re sure someone would pay top-dollar as the product sold out at Clarins locations overnight, but luckily, it’s still in stock online. Head over to clarinsusa.com to pick up your own tube for $24 while you still can!
Idina Menzel’s showstopping rendition of Frozen‘s “Let It Go” last night at the 2014 Oscars wasn’t the only thing that hit all the right notes! In addition to the star’s deep green Vera Wang gown, we were also taken by her clean, elegant makeup, which got an extra pop of color later in the night, How did she do it? We just had to get the exclusive details from her makeup artist Matin. ”I was inspired by Idina’s porcelain skin to create a makeup look that would exude a luminous glow, but that wasn’t overly bronzed,” he tells InStyle.com. “I brought out the highlights of her fair skin by using shimmery tones from the Pixi Mesmerizing Mineral Palette ($12; pixibeauty.com).”
To ensure her complexion stayed flawless all night long, Matin prepped Menzel’s skin with a layer of the Flawless & Poreless Primer ($22; target.com). He then used the Flawless Vitamin Veil ($24; target.com) all over, then touched up underneath her eyes using the Pixi Correction Concentrate ($12; target.com). “I also played up her beautiful bone structure and complemented her stunning emerald gown by dabbing the Succulent Lip Twin in Coral Camellia on her cheeks, and the same product in Nude Opal ($18 each; target.com) on her lips,” he adds. The result was a nude lip that was anything but boring, complemented by a radiant flush. To give the look extra drama for her performance, Matin added a bold green cat-eye using the Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen in EmeraldGold ($12; target.com) just before Menzel took the stage. We love it!
We’re loving Kerry Washington‘s sexy half up-do, smoldering Jason Wu strapless gown and that deep, raisin lip. Her makeup artist, Carola Gonzalez prepped the Scandal star’s pout with Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm ($9 at neutrogena.com) to hydrate before lipstick application. “It really helps to keep lips moisturized and diminish appearance of dryness. Leave for at least 20 min before lipstick application,” says Gonzalez. Once fully moisturized she smoothed on Armani Cosmetics Rouge d’Armani 609 ($34 at giorgioarmanibeauty-us.com) and topped it off with Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Rich Raisin ($9 at neutrogena.com) to add a bit of sheen.
