Found It! Zoe Saldana’s True Crimson Lipstick

May 16, 2013 @ 1:30 pm

Red lipstick has been a popular choice for Zoe Saldana during her whirlwind Star Trek Into Darkness premiere tour, but the sanguine hue she paired with her daring Rodarte number in Los Angeles made the biggest impact yet! “As soon as I saw the dress, I knew we had to go with a red lip,” said her makeup artist Vera Steimberg, who chose Laura Mercier‘s Creme Smooth Lip Color in Hollywood. “I wanted to create a chic, French-inspired look for Zoe.” Because the striking color can bring out redness in your complexion, take extra time to conceal any imperfections so that your lips remain the focal point. Pick up a tube of Saldana’s lipstick for $26 at lauramercier.com.

Found It! Carey Mulligan’s Really Red Lipstick from Cannes

May 16, 2013 @ 11:55 am

While the true red lipstick Carey Mulligan wore to the Cannes Film Festival yesterday could have doubled as a hue worn by her ’20s-era Great Gatsby character Daisy Buchanan, the precise shape and her clean skin gave the look a current edge. “It’s a big statement for her and we wanted to keep it as modern as possible,” said her makeup artist Georgie Eisdell, who used the NARS hue in Jungle Red ($26; narscosmetics.com). “I loved the idea of contrast with her pale pink dress, and I thought a red lip would be striking.” Before sweeping on the color, Eisdell lined the star’s lips using the matching Jungle Red lip pencil ($24; narscosmetics.com). If you can’t find an exact matching color set, use a nude lip liner to ensure a perfect application. Use a lip brush to avoid any uneven areas, and clean up any smudges with a swipe of concealer. The precise shape is key to recreating Mulligan’s look.

How Rihanna’s First Lipstick for MAC Can Be Yours

May 1, 2013 @ 2:00 pm

In February, we reported that Rihanna was working on a makeup collection with MAC, and now the wait is over! Starting Thursday, May 2, the singer will debut her RiRi Woo lipstick online and at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, where ticketholders for her Diamonds World Tour concert can pick up a tube at a pop-up shop. The shade is Rihanna’s take on MAC’s iconic Ruby Woo lipstick, which she remixed by adding a touch of the deep wine tone she favors. The singer will be rolling out additional products with the brand through the year. “The rule about not matching your makeup to your outfit is dated,” she told InStyle previously. “I do that on stage, matching red lipstick to a bright red jacket or neon-pink eye shadow to a pink jumpsuit!” Shop RiRi Woo Thursday, May 2 for $15 at maccosmetics.com.

Found It! Winona Ryder’s Cherry Red Lipstick

Apr 30, 2013 @ 5:30 pm

Winona Ryder tied two classic looks together when she paired her Zac Posen LBD with a bold red lip at the New York screening of The Iceman, but her makeup artist Nick Barose found a way to make it more modern with her lip liner. “I don’t like using a matching red pencil because it can look harsh,” said Barose, who chose Tom Ford’s appropriately-named Cherry Lush lipstick for the star. “Instead, I applied the lipstick directly from the tube, cleaned around the edges using a good lip brush, then blended a highlighting concealer around the mouth.” A mismatched lip pencil can create too much contrast—not to mention that dreaded outlined effect—so try this trick when using a vivid shade like Ryder’s. “It brightens the area around the mouth so the color pops more, and it helps her red lipstick from bleeding or feathering,” he added. Pick up a tube of Tom Ford’s Cherry Lush hue for $48 at bergdorfgoodman.com.

How to Look Like Gwyneth Paltrow for $30

Apr 27, 2013 @ 2:00 pm

When we weren’t looking at Gwyneth Paltrow‘s see-through ensemble at the Iron Man 3 premiere, we couldn’t help but notice the glowing makeup and subtle blush lip gloss the world’s most beautiful woman had chosen to complete her look. The color amped up the natural tone of her lips and gave off a shiny finish. “My inspiration for Gwyneth’s look was the Earth,” said her makeup artist Angela Levin. “She reminds me of the things I love about our world—she’s an inspiration to women and people.” To keep in line with the organic feel of Paltrow’s makeup, Levin opted for Chanel’s Glossimer in Rose Sauvage. The sheer petal hue is part of the label’s new summer lineup, and looks gorgeous layered over natural lips and vivid shades alike. Find the product for $30 at chanel.com.

Editor-Tested: This Blue Lipstick Is Actually Wearable

Apr 17, 2013 @ 10:45 am

Aside from the creative makeup choices on Halloween, can blue lipstick really be worn in the real world? We asked InStyle.com Assistant Beauty Editor Marianne Mychaskiw to try out the Hello Sailor shade by Lipstick Queen, and it turns out, the results were more chic than shocking. Keep reading to see her thoughts!

“I’m a sucker for lip products, and the tawny nudes in Lipstick Queen‘s impressive range have been staples in my makeup bag for years. The brand’s new Hello Sailor shade ($25; barneys.com) served as a fond reminder of the dark blue lipstick my best friend and I used to steal from her cool older sister’s Caboodle kit, but while the ’90s are having a renaissance, I wasn’t sure if I was ready to revisit such a severe color. To my surprise, the product was very sheer and transformed into a transparent berry stain once it hit my lips. I’m not very adventurous when it comes to lip color, so I loved how the balm-like consistency allowed me to build upon the intensity. Plus, it’s a pain-free alternative to whitening strips—the faint blue pigments in the formula actually make your teeth appear whiter! I’m definitely not retiring my nude lipsticks anytime soon, but this is a baby-step in a bolder direction.”
