How Dianna Agron’s New Hair Color Has Changed Her Wardrobe

May 5, 2013 @ 11:00 am

Do blondes have more fun? Not according to Dianna Agron! We caught up with the star at Brian Bowen Smith’s Chateau Marmont party in Hollywood, who told us how her new red hue has brought out a wilder side in her wardrobe. “As a blonde, I would have never put this dress on!” she said of her Marc Jacobs number. “We went to the store and we saw stripes, sequins, and animal print. It was all in the black, white, and taupe color palette which, I’m a big fan of, especially now with the dark hair. As a blonde, it wouldn’t work as much.” While we’ve never seen the star look anything less than flawless, we have to agree—the chic leopard print does pair nicely with her auburn strands, and we can’t wait to see the new outfits to come. “I’m gravitating to things that I wouldn’t normally wear,” she added. As the clichéd saying goes, a leopard can’t change its spots, but you can change your hair color to complement them!

Why Miley Cyrus Really Loves Her Short Hair

May 3, 2013 @ 11:45 am

Pixie cuts hold more style options than they get credit for, and just by changing up the texture, you can take your look from polished to edgy in five seconds flat—a rule that Miley Cyrus knows well. The star surprised everyone in August when she ditched her lengthy Hannah Montana strands for a punk rock crop, and she’s been playing with new looks daily since then. “It’s crazy because every day, your hair is different when it’s short,” the star told us at Brian Bowen Smith’s book launch in Hollywood. “Every day I wake up, and I get something new. So it’s fun!” Because of the ultra-short length, simple changes like re-positioning your part or giving your strands a slight tousle look more dramatic than they do on longer hairstyles. “It’s 100% the best bed head you could ever have,” Cyrus added. “You wake up and you feel pretty good, or if you don’t, you slap on a little Valentino pin and you’re like, ‘Okay, I’m cute today!’” Quick, chic, and easy—we love it.

How to Gradually Lighten Your Hair Like Drew Barrymore

Apr 30, 2013 @ 12:30 pm

Drew Barrymore loves switching up her hair color, but somehow, it never looks dry or damaged. Her secret? Making drastic changes slowly. Over the course of a few months, the star has been gradually lightening her deep brunette to the sunny blonde she revealed while out in Hollywood yesterday. “I changed my hair color three times in the past year!” the star told InStyle in February. “Why not try new things? Life is short. I’ll always play.” That’s the spirit, Drew! Going from dark brown to a light blonde like Barrymore’s can be damaging, so if you’re also feeling playful with your color, follow the star’s lead and work in stages. “Try taking the process with days or even weeks in between to see if your hair will get too dry or damaged,” said colorist Marie Robinson, who works with Michelle Williams. “Start with a color close to your natural that is a subtle enhancement. If you notice excessive dryness, then work with the lightness you already have.” Because blonde hues tend to make the hair shaft more porous, aftercare is important. Invest in a color-preserving shampoo and conditioner duo, and apply an intensive hair mask once a week to lock in hydration.

We Asked, You Voted: 70% of InStyle.com Readers Love Jennifer Lawrence’s New Haircut!

Apr 24, 2013 @ 8:00 am

In case you haven’t already heard, Jennifer Lawrence cut her hair over the weekend. Even though the transformation happened mere days ago, we’re already declaring the style a phenomenon—and our readers agree. We asked you to vote yay or nay on Lawrence’s crop, and 70% of you voted that you love her new look. Reader Rachel Klopp wrote on InStyle’s Facebook wall: ”Love it! She always looks perfect,” a feeling echoed by dozens of other readers. And it’s no surprise to us—the length combined with her warm highlights are flattering on almost everyone. ”The color is a medley of sandy blonde ribbons amidst a background of caramel and honey,” her colorist Lorri Goddard told InStyle.com. “It works well on Jennifer because it accents her beautiful features.” Want to plan a similar shift in shade? Keep your undertones in mind. A good indicator is to see the type of jewelry you favor. Warm skin tones are flattered by gold jewelry and should opt for equally-warm, golden tones, while cool skin tones are a better pair to silver jewelry and ash-based hair hues.

Minka Kelly Isn’t a Brunette Anymore! See Her Blonde Hair Makeover

Apr 23, 2013 @ 3:40 pm

Talk about blonde ambition! Earlier this week, brunette bombshell Minka Kelly swapped her signature shade for a sunnier blonde hue. Her colorist Tracey Cunningham unveiled the star’s new look on her Instagram, and Cunningham predicts that many others will follow suit this spring. “Spring and summer is the prime time to shake up your blonde by adding soft golden shades that will really make your look pop,” she said in a Redken trend forecast. And Kelly agrees—she loved her new look so much, she left a comment on Cunningham’s Instagram singing her praises. “Thank you for the fun summer goldierocks,” she wrote. “I love it! You’re the best in the biz!” Do you like her new look?

Jennifer Lawrence’s “Shag” Haircut: All the Details From Her Hairstylist Mark Townsend

Apr 23, 2013 @ 1:00 pm

Jennifer Lawrence can do no wrong! Everyone’s celebrity BFF surprised us by unveiling a covetable long bob this weekend, so we caught up with her hairstylist Mark Townsend to get all the details on her new cut. “I love this shag on her! Jennifer can go straight for a super-chic look, or wavy for a fun, playful style,” Townsend told InStyle.com. “Plus, it’s long enough so she can still wear her hair in a short ponytail or updo.” If Lawrence has you inspired, be sure to bring a picture to the salon so your stylist can recreate her choppy, face-framing layers and long bangs. To form her waves, Townsend applied Dove’s Whipped Cream Mousse ($5; drugstore.com) to Lawrence’s damp strands and blow-dried using a round brush. “I took random sections of hair and wrapped them around a one-inch curling iron,” he said. “To finish, I sprayed Sally Hershberger Texture Blast ($24; sallyhershberger.com) on the ends for that cool, piecey look.” We love it—this length allows such versatility!
