Ever since we first spotted Margot Robbie in the short-lived TV drama Pan Am, she’s worn her signature shade of blonde — worn it well, we might add! For her upcoming film Z for Zachariah, the Wolf of Wall Street star is swapping her typical glamorous look for a casual wardrobe and toned-down chestnut strands. “Prep for Z for Zachariah is well and truly underway,” Robbie tweeted before posting a picture of her new hue. ”I’m now officially a brunette, and spent the day milking cows and driving tractors!” Now that’s what we call commitment to character! Combined with her casual getup, the tawny brown color is definitely a change, but we’re convinced that the star can pull off just about anything — her past red carpet looks serve as proof. Take a look at her new ‘do after the jump, and see even more celebrity hair makeovers in our gallery!
Bye-bye pink hair, hello red! While we were obsessing over the risky hair choices spotted at the Grammys last night, Sienna Miller made an equally-bold move over the weekend when she swapped her peachy-pink strands for a solid auburn hue. We haven’t seen this side of Miller in almost a decade — the last time she went for a similar effect was in 2004 when she unveiled a red-tinted brunette shade on the Oscars red carpet, but judging from the layered bangs, pixie cuts, and deep brown styles she has worn, it’s clear that the star has no reservations when it comes to trying out a new look. “I’m really not too attached to my hair,” she told InStyle previously. “If I worried about what people thought about my look, I’d get it all wrong.” Her adventurous attitude certainly paid off! We think the style is flattering on the star, and the warm hue is especially striking against her fair skin tone. The future is now, and it’s looking more fabulous than ever. Google Glass, everyone’s favorite wearable computer, gave us a brand new (and literal) way to see technology, and now the device is revolutionizing the hair styling game in their new partnership with Matrix.
Google has teamed up with the brand to launch the Matrix Class for Glass, which will provide the user with full-length hair tutorials filmed from the viewpoint of the stylist — meaning you’ll be able to see exactly how your pro works their salon magic. In the next few weeks, Matrix will roll out a video series in which celebrity hairstylist George Papanikolas, who has worked with Mila Kunis and Kim Kardashian, demonstrates a range of looks on the nation’s most-viral beauty gurus. You’ll even have the chance to get your own personalized video with Papanikolas in the program’s Eye for Style session.
And pros can also get in on the fun — Matrix will launch an additional component in April, allowing hairstylists to take a virtual class lead by the brand’s artistic directors Ammon Carver (pictured), Nicolas French, an Chrystofer Benson, where they’ll be schooled new salon techniques from the artist’s point of view. Head over to mymatrixfamily.com for more info on how you can participate, and keep an eye out for the tutorials coming soon to matrix.com and the brand’s YouTube channel.
It’s a subtle change for a big role. To play Becca in Broadway’s The Commons of Pensacola alongside Blythe Danner, Sarah Jessica Parker ditched her trademark ombre for a toned-down chestnut hue. “She’s playing a role that requires her to be less glamorous, so we decided to do less highlights and keep it natural,” her colorist Gina Gilbert of Serge Normant Salon told InStyle.com exclusively. “It’s closer to her natural color. It’s the season to go a bit darker, and she has the skin tone that looks good against dark or light hair.” Agreed!
If our February cover girl‘s recent change has you inspired, or you’re looking to kick off the new year with a new hue, Gilbert advises against making any spontaneous decisions. “Make sure you’re 100% ready for a change so you’re not in shock, and give yourself some time to get used to it,” she added. “Also, don’t do it too dark all at once — it’s better to make the change gradually. Avoid inky colors, and make sure the one you choose is a rich, warm tone.”
What a change! Among the many creative hairstyles at last night’s People’s Choice Awards, Naya Rivera‘s ‘do surprised us the most — the Glee star hit the red carpet in a striking new honey blonde shade. We loved the striking effect against her colorblocked Michael Kors number, and we can’t help but wonder how the look will affect her on-screen persona, Santana Lopez. Rivera, who is engaged to rapper Big Sean, rarely changes up her signature brunette tone, but we’re loving her lighter hair, and can’t wait to see the many surely-glamorous ways she’ll be styling it. We want to know: Do you like her blonde strands? Sound off in the comments!
2014 is already off to a chic start, as evidenced by Kristen Wiig‘s bob! Last night at the Los Angeles premiere of The Spoils of Babylon, the star’s new shoulder-length look served as the perfect finishing touch to her embellished Valentino dress. Wiig has been keeping her hairstylist busy these days — in addition to her cut, the star ended 2013 by taking her ombre highlights to a rich auburn tone. “I’ve always wanted to go red and I’ve never done it before,” she told InStyle.com previously. “It was just sort of [one of those things] where I’m not working right now and it was sort of like, ‘Okay yeah, I’ll just go for it.’” The shorter length emphasizes her deeper hue, and we have to say, she wears the look well! Tell us, do you like the change?
There are certain indisputable truths in life, and the fact that Beyoncé can pull off just about any look is one of them. In the videos for her eponymous visual album, the star showcased a wide variety of hairstyles, ranging from her pixie that rocked the world to her trademark long waves — and just about everything in between. Eager to get the details on each look, we caught up with Bey’s hairstylist Neal Farinah, who created 15 out of the 17 dynamic looks for her videos, and has been working with Knowles for seven years. “We have had such iconic moments together,” he told InStyle.com exclusively. “I’ve worked on campaign and publication shoots with her, she was the first female artist to headline at Glastonbury, and I had the opportunity to do her hair for both presidential inaugurations. It was a historic moment — she sang for Barack Obama and the First Lady, and it was hard to explain how I felt at that moment, because while I was doing her hair, I feel like I was representing everyone, and I felt proud and very grateful.”
As if working on 15 of her new videos didn’t keep him busy enough, Farinah was simultaneously working with Beyoncé during her Mrs. Carter World Tour. Filming often took place on the same day as a show, and the multiple hair changes — her pixie and long bob included — always kept fans guessing what she’d try next. “People were seeing her with long hair one day, short hair one day, and they didn’t know what was happening. We’d work on the videos while on tour, so sometimes we didn’t have much time to go back and redo her hair,” he said. “People were speculating, but what she was doing was working on her masterpiece of a visual album.”
We asked Farinah to give us the details behind each of her versatile hairstyles, and to find out the inspiration behind each of the looks, including her long, sexy waves in “Jealous,” and her ombre bob in the artistic “Mine” video.
Britney Spears is no stranger to the platinum end of the spectrum — of her eight albums, seven of them have received the certification, and now her strands are following suit. The star revealed her pale blonde hue on Instagram, a change that may have happened for her upcoming residency at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, which is set to start on the 27th. Although her hair and makeup are always on point, when it comes to beauty, Britney admits that she’s more complexion-obsessed. “I’m more of a skin-care girl. I’m obsessed because of my mom, that’s what she totally believes in,” she told us in our January issue. “I also love face creams. I have no problems trying new brands.” What do you think of her new look? Tell us in the comments below!
