Who knew a spontaneous decision could make the biggest statement of the night! Next to Lupita Nyong’o‘s Cinderella-esque gown, Jared Leto‘s ombre strands also ranked among the most buzzed-about style moments at the Oscars, but the look could have turned out much different from the gorgeous waves we saw on the red carpet. Leto and his hairstylist Chase Kusero, who used Vidal Sassoon products, were originally going to go for a side-parted low bun with a wet, mirror-like finish, but at the very last minute, the duo opted for a low-key look that worked with the actor’s natural texture. We loved his loose texture and the subtle graduation in color so much, we started to wonder how the style would look on us — which is why we added it to our Hollywood Makeover Tool! Are you curious to see how Leto’s ombre waves will flatter you? Simply upload your picture to our Hollywood Makeover Tool to start, and once the style is in place, share your makeover with your friends on Facebook and Twitter to see what they think. You can even upload your new look to Instagram as a MakeoverGram, and if you’re inspired to make a more permanent change, load the style on your mobile phone or iPad to bring to your hairstylist. While the glamorous gowns lining the venue were the main focus at last night’s Oscars red carpet, the elegant beauty looks complementing each ensemble certainly didn’t go unnoticed. To mirror the princess feeling of her Prada gown, first-time Oscar winner and belle of the ball Lupita Nyong’o added a diamond-studded Fred Leighton headband to her cute pixie, which she complemented with a pop-of-color lip. Charlize Theron, on the other hand, played up her eyes, opting for a Twiggy-inspired white liner and lush lashes, while Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett paired her soft retro curls with a luminous complexion. But they aren’t the only stars who won big in the beauty department — after watching the entire ceremony and taking notes on our favorites, we rounded up the prettiest makeup and most-elegant hairstyles of the night, along with tips from the pros who created each look. Jared Leto has had quite a year thanks to his transformative role in Dallas Buyers Club, which has already earned him a Golden Globe award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. But his ombré locks have also created some buzz, you could even say his hair is on fire right now.
“It’s on fire? It’s en fuego,” Leto told InStyle during the Independent Spirit Awards (where he took home a trophy for Best Supporting Actor). As for his Oscar hairdo tonight, he gave us a hint yesterday afternoon as to how he might style it. “If it’s raining maybe I”ll wear it up. It happens right before, not a lot…goes into it.” Thankfully the rain held off because the nominated actor chose to wear his locks down versus the chic man-bun we saw at the 2014 Golden Globes. Whoever said that short hair tends to fall flat clearly hasn’t seen the versatile looks Lupita Nyong’o has been working on the red carpet! Second to her fashion-forward ensembles and daring makeup choices, we’ve also taken note of the star’s many hairstyles, which prove that switching up your part, or playing with volume can create completely different effects as evidenced by the mini-pompadour she wore to the NAACP Image Awards, and her rocker-chic ‘do at the Non-Stop premiere. Our favorite look by far has to be the dainty Fred Leighton hair accessory she wore to the 2014 Oscars, which even gained its own Twitter account only moments after we spotted it on the red carpet.
To create the elegant look, the star’s hairstylist Larry Sims worked a quarter-sized amount of the Smooth ‘N Shine Go Pro Curls Gelle Parfait ($13; smoothnshine.com for locations) into her damp strands, then diffused her hair with a dryer to bring out her natural curls. After slicking back the front and sides of her hairline with the Smooth ‘N Shine Go Pro Creme Oil ($12; smoothnshine.com for locations), Sims pushed the Fred Leighton headband into place, and shaped the hair at the crown around the accessory. A veil of the Göt2b Rise and Shine Luminous Lift Hairspray ($7; ulta.com) provided the finishing touch. “The product has an added glossy hold that will keep her hair in place throughout a night of star-studded after parties,” Sims adds.
While we are counting down the days until season two of Orange Is the New Black premieres on June 6th, Taryn Manning, one of the show’s stars, is taking a timeout from the signature brunette hairdo her role requires (Spoiler alert: her troubled character, Tiffany ‘Pennsatucky’ Doggett, lives on to see the new season).
The actress debuted a bright, platinum hair color last night at the Vanity Fair and Fiat Young Hollywood Party, which she pulled back into a loose bun. ”I just felt I’ve been playing this role on this show, and I have a very specific look. Honestly, I just wanted to take a break from that,” Manning tells InStyle. “I’m on hiatus [from filming Orange Is the New Black], and I just wanted to be extreme. I’m doing a new role coming up, and I thought that the character would look cool as a white, light bulb blonde.”
Manning is no stranger to blonde locks, as the actress’ hair has been different variations of the shade over the years, beginning when she was in her teens. ”I started using Sun In when I was like 13, and that’s what started the process,” the actress says. From rainbow-hued highlights to majorly blunt bangs, Manning has never been one to shy away from a hair switch-up. ”It’s fun to change your look,” she states.

Do blondes really have more fun? We’re still debating, but Julia Roberts is making a serious case for the statement by revisiting the sunny hue. Over the weekend, the star took her trademark auburn to a pale blonde, which served as a more dramatic take on the golden highlights she debuted in June 2012. Roberts tends to go back and forth between blonde and her signature color, but her hair risks aren’t limited to just shifts in shade. “I once randomly cut my hair off before a shoot,” the star told InStyle previously. “A girlfriend of mine cut it in another friend’s kitchen. I sat there without even a mirror, and she chopped it.”
These days, Roberts frequents the salon of her hairstylist Serge Normant, who has been her mane man for years, but we’re glad to see her adventurous attitude to hair hasn’t gone on the wayside. Get a closer look at Julia’s new ‘do, and see more celebrity hair makeovers in our gallery.
That was fast! After a brief stint as a brunette, Britney Spears made the switch to a bold red hue late last week. While the star has never been a redhead before, we have seen her in two very similar looks — back in 2003, Spears showed off a dramatic fire engine hue in her “Toxic” video, and later donned an auburn wig with blunt bangs for the “Womanizer” video in 2008. Six years later, the singer’s crimson hair has made a comeback, and is still flattering as ever. Besides, we’re sure the shade helps her get into character by the time she plays “Toxic” each night at her Las Vegas show! With spring on the horizon, many of us are tempted to lighten up our current hue, but Elizabeth Olsen decided to take things in the opposite direction by taking her sunny blonde strands to a deep brunette just before a taping of Watch What Happens Live on Bravo. While everyone else was buzzing over her answer when a caller asked who her favorite sibling was, we were fixated on how well her new hair color complements her skin tone. For the record, Olsen doesn’t play favorites when it comes to family “Ashley remembered my birthday, but I don’t hold grudges against Mary-Kate for forgetting mine. She was out of town!” she tells host Andy Cohen. “We’re all very close. I’m very close with my brother as well. I should have just said him — it would have been the easier scapegoat!” Too funny! Regardless of who she really favors, we loved her diplomatic answer, not to mention her glossy, Earth-toned strands. Get a closer look at her ‘do, and click through for more celebrity hair makeovers!
