It’s chilly in Chicago right now—no wonder The Good Wife‘s Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) is bundling up! “She’s going through fall with us,” the show’s costume designer, Dan Lawson, told InStyle.com exclusively. That’s why he chose on-trend and on-season pieces, like a black Escada jacket, berry-toned Gucci blazer, and a plum Basler design. “She had a little more color this time around, and she stayed so chic.” And warm! The drama is heating up on The Good Wife! After Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) broke away from Lockhart Gardner, the firm re-enters her life by way of subpoenas. But she can hack it, of course, thanks to a powerful wardrobe that keeps her looking as sharp as her wit. “The look is so clean and architectural this year,” costume designer Daniel Lawson told InStyle.com. Her looks last night included a black and white Escada jacket, a navy leather and suede No. 35 suit and a gray flannel Salvatore Ferragamo pantsuit. “These were some of our most favorite outfits of the season,” Lawson added. And they were sharp, indeed. Flip through the gallery to get all of the details.
Secrets from Olivia’s past were revealed in last night’s Scandal! We found out more about her rocky relationship with her father and her early (and dangerous!) encounters with a homeless Huck. With so many flashbacks during Episode 2, it meant only one thing for Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope: 14 outfit changes! Costume designer Lyn Paolo gave InStyle.com the scoop on how she distinguishes Olivia’s past looks from her present ones. “In flashbacks, we use items that are just a little sweeter and a little less elegant than what she wears now,” Paolo said. To contrast those softer looks, Olivia wears a structured gray Escada suit in most of the episode’s ”present day” scenes. “We went darker with this suit and it’s Olivia at her toughest,” the costume designer explained. Our favorite Gladiators returned last night for the third season premiere of Scandal! The episode picked up only 22 minutes after last season’s finale and even though Olivia Pope is facing national news of her leaked affair with the President, she’s still dressing as fierce and chic as ever. We spoke with costume designer, Lyn Paolo, who gave us the low-down on Olivia’s wardrobe this season. “There is a style evolution on several of the characters, but on Olivia, you’ll see how tumultuous her personal life is,” Paolo tells InStyle. “We’ve made some adjustments to her costume and she’s in a darker palette this year.” Olivia must sort through two rocky relationships – one with her estranged father and another with Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) — and that will be reflected in her wardrobe choices this season. Case in point: the dark gray Escada jacket and Armani silk tank she wore last night when she caught her Pope & Associates gang trying to “fix” her. The jig is up! Well, sort of. Nothing is every that clear-cut on Scandal. The crack team of crisis managers at Pope & Associates is finally discovering the truth about Fitz’s rigged election campaign and realizing that their fearless leader, Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) has some serious skeletons in her closet (alongside her covetable wardrobe). On tonight’s episode, you’ll see Pope in a creamy Escada jacket, which has some significance, costume designer Lyn Paolo told us. “As things become more complicated and our insight into our characters evolve, we decided to play with dark and light in the costume, using a typical Olivia Pope white/light gray jacket but coupling it with a darker pair of pants and dark toned shoes and purse,” Paolo told InStyle.com. “As the intrigue continues we will continue to use color in the evolution of our characters.” How intriguing! Tune in tonight at 10 p.m. EST on ABC to see what happens when the truth is revealed about Olivia’s involvement in the election.

Even in her downtime Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) is dressed to perfection. On the last episode of Scandal we saw Pope’s softer side: relaxing at her impressive pad, dining on popcorn and Boudreaux (a balanced meal in our opinion!), and stepping into the office sans bigwig clients. The show’s costume designer, Lyn Paolo, filled us in on Pope’s enviable ensemble (pictured) of a creamy silk Gucci blouse and cozy Escada cardigan paired with Max Mara pants. “In the same way that we try to soften Olivia’s look when she is lounging at home, there are also moments at Pope and Associates when she is not with a client,” Paolo told InStyle.com. “We like to get her out of her suits and into something softer and very feminine.” Now that’s our idea of business casual! Catch Scandal Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.

A new episode of The Good Wife premiered last night, in which Julianna Margulies’s character Alicia Florrick prosecutes a member of the U.S. military for rape (Amanda Peet guest stars as the victim). To visually balance the courtroom, with its mix of military uniforms and suits, costume designer Daniel Lawson dressed Alicia in a Christian Dior suit that made her pop—a conscious decision to prove her presence and power. “I am not one to pick favorites, but this is one of favorites that she’s worn in three and a half years,” he told InStyle.com. By the end of the case and the episode, he pushed more for the “status quo” with her looks, as seen with these black Calvin Klein and gray Escada outfits. Click through for more details about why he picked these looks!
