If you need further evidence that rules were meant to be broken, look to Jessica Biel, who brought summery turquoise eyeliner right into the fall season last night at the Museum of Modern Art’s tribute to Tilda Swinton in New York City. To create her look, Biel’s makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua used Chanel’s Waterproof Liner in Jade ($30; chanel.com) along her bottom lashes. “We were inspired by Jessica’s dress from the Chanel 2014 runway, and wanted to create the look of a simplified, modern Egyptian Nefertiti,” Bua said. “I blended the liner below the lash line, outward to a point, and inside the inner waterline.” On a budget? We also love Urban Decay’s 24-7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Electric ($19; sephora.com) and CoverGirl’s version in Aquamarine Ink ($7; drugstore.com), which both create similar effects. Follow Biel’s lead by keeping the rest of your makeup minimal, with slight definition on your top lid, and finish with a tawny nude lip. Since blue and green tones make such a big impact, playing with too many colors at once can create an overdone effect.
Lupita Nyong’O continues to be one of our rising style icons — check out her glamorous red carpet ensembles if you need further proof — and the steely silver eye makeup she wore to an event in New York City is her latest look we’ll be trying out this week. “We were kind of inspired by Diana Ross in the Supremes,” said her makeup artist Nick Barose. “I also kept the lips pale, so the whole look has a slight ’60s, futuristic feel.” Barose used the pale grey shadow from Dior‘s 5-Color Designer Palette in Smoky Design ($60; dior.com) all over, then added slight definition along the crease. “Grey is a perfect neutral that looks dramatic, but not too out-there,” he told us. “There are more than 50 shades of grey, and you can go either light or dark. Since it’s a blend of black and white, it looks great against all skin tones.” The finishing touch came with a winged-out sweep of Dolce & Gabbana’s Glam Liner in black ($34; sephora.com). “Elongated liner is a great way to add drama to the eyes,” he added.
The days of girly pinks and boyish blues are long gone. Instead, the increasing intrigue with androgynous dressing means there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to what you can and cannot wear. Cue the line-up of celebrities who have eschewed flirty frocks in favor of sharp tuxedo vests (a la Olivia Palermo), power suits and tailored pieces. And let’s give credit where credit is due—our obsession for dapper styles became official when Jennifer Lawrence‘s fierce editorial spread in the fall-winter issue of Dior magazine came to light. From gold-button blazers to striped Oxford button-downs to wingtip brogues, channel the opposite sex with our 19 gentlemanly sartorial picks.
Put A Little Scary Movie Magic Into Your Halloween Makeup With Rick Baker and MAC Cosmetics Beauty LineOct 31, 2013 @ 10:16 am
Legendary special effects artist and creature creator Rick Baker (Men in Black, Thriller and upcoming Maleficent) has teamed up with MAC Cosmetics to bring a little movie magic to our personal makeup counter. “I always wanted to make Halloween makeup but I wanted it to be quality makeup,” Baker told InStyle.com. “I didn’t want it to be the junk that you use in a kit.” Practicing on himself to perfect each of the three Halloween looks he created for the collaboration-bride, Day of the Dead and Zombie, Baker also filmed step-by step DIY YouTube videos that explain the how to for those of us trying it at home. ”People would ask me, where do we get the appliances to create these looks? It’s not appliances, it’s just two little pencils. It’s all just colors on the face,” says Baker. The special MAC collection, which is available now through the end of October, includes Cyber deep plum lipstick, currant and brick lips pencils, two pro shadow palettes, a black penultima eyeliner, two paint-sticks, set powder, chroma cake, acrylic paint, face and body foundation and Monster FX dirt bronzer.

Effortless and edgy, the wine-red shade (which has also been spotted on Burberry, Armani, and Louis Vuitton runways) adds oomph to any look. “The nice thing about this shade is that it plays well with almost all the key colors of the season, like grey, olive green, and deep blue,” says Amy Synnott-D’Annibale, InStyle’s executive editor. Congratulations are in order for Blake Lively, who has just been confirmed as the latest face of L’Oréal Paris. The actress and fashion icon will join ranks with Jennifer Lopez, Julianne Moore, Beyoncé Knowles, and Eva Longoria — all who have served as spokeswomen for the beauty brand. Blake will appear in campaigns for cosmetics, hair care and hair color for L’Oréal, who chose the actress because she embodies modern Hollywood glamour. ”She has become a beauty icon for a whole generation,” said Cyril Chapuy, Brand Global President of L’Oréal Paris. ”We’re so proud to welcome her.” Lively, who celebrated her one year wedding anniversary with husband Ryan Reynolds last month, is excited to become part of the iconic brand. “I am thrilled and honored to join the incredible women who represent L’Oréal Paris,” Lively stated. “I grew up with the inspiration of their message, ‘We’re worth it.’ What an important value to instill in women. That beauty is rooted in confidence. That is key. That is why I’m so proud to be a L’Oréal Paris woman.” We can’t wait to see her gorgeous locks and flawless skin grace the L’Oréal campaigns!

Chanel No. 5 is arguably one of the most iconic fragrances on the market, so it makes perfect sense that one of its biggest fans is the brand’s new face — Marilyn Monroe! Rather than opting for a hologram cameo, Chanel dug into their archives and found a never-heard interview from 1960 with Monroe and Marie Claire‘s then editor-in-chief Georges Belmont, in which the star gushed over the heady rose and jasmine blend. Monroe, who passed away in 1962, certainly didn’t keep her love of the fragrance a secret. While she didn’t appear in any of the label’s advertisements during her lifetime, Chanel No. 5 gained momentum following her first Life magazine cover in 1952. “Somebody was always asking me, ‘What do you sleep in, Marilyn? Do you sleep in PJs? Do you sleep in a nightie?’ It’s just one of those questions which make you wonder how to answer them,” she said. “Then, I remembered the truth is the easiest way out, so I said, ‘I sleep in Chanel No. 5,’ because I do.” Keep an eye out for the campaign rolling out in November, but in the meantime, check out Chanel’s tribute to the actress at chanel.com.
