Manicure to Try: Deep Blue and Gold Flakes

Oct 13, 2012 @ 4:30 pm

Inspired by the gorgeous marriage of blue and gold in a lapis lazuli gemstone,
this bold pattern is more sophisticated than leopard—but no less daring. Get the look in three easy steps.

STEP 1 Apply two coats of a deep
navy blue. Try MAC Cosmetics Nail Lacquer in Spirit of Truth ($16; maccosmetics.com). Allow to dry for 10 minutes so you won’t leave any imprints when working with the foils.

STEP 2 Dip a toothpick into a topcoat, then use the end to attach a gold flake. We like to us Art Club by
Color Club Gold Foil Flakes ($5; shopcolorclub.com). Place it down, and carefully flatten
the edges with your fingertip. Repeat
using smaller and larger pieces to
 create a varied design.

STEP 3 Add topcoat to seal.

Found It! Rita Ora’s Bright Red Lipstick

Oct 10, 2012 @ 11:22 am

British singer Rita Ora, the voice behind the super-catchy pop hit “How We Do,” painted on some party-perfect lips when she performed at Absolut Tune’s launch in New York last night. It’s MAC’s Ruby Woo, she told us, which you can get over on maccosmetics.com for $15. (The shade is also a favorite of Maggie Gyllenhaal.) The hue amps up the singer’s glammed-up street style look, which helps her party girl persona. “Everyone always asks me, ‘So Rita, How you do? Do you like to party?’” the 21-year-old told InStyle.com at the event. “And my answer is, ‘Yeah, I do!’ I’m loving it.” See more celebrity lip colors we love in the gallery.

The Blonds Auction Off One-of-a-Kind Pink Barbie for MAC AIDS Fund!

Sep 12, 2012 @ 12:30 pm

The real star at The Blonds runway show last night in New York was the new Barbie the glamorous designers created (their second!) to support the MAC AIDS Fund. The all-pink doll, which is covered in tiny Swarovski crystals, is being auctioned off on charitybuzz.com through September 25. “She is special because she’s completely covered in Swarovski crystals,” designer David Blond told InStyle.com at the show. “And her shoes have these tiny, tiny crystals pavéd all over them.” Why did the platinum designers decide to collaborate with Mattel on the doll, who also (naturally) comes outfitted with a bright pink fur coat? “Working with Barbie seemed like the perfect partnership because she says, ‘You can be anything you want to be,” David said. David’s design partner Phillipe explained a bit more about the process of dressing the ultimate doll: “She borrowed my heels and my corset and my coat, and she’s looking dazzling as ever.” We agree! Runway Beauty Looks We Love: Tory Burch

Sep 11, 2012 @ 6:35 pm

Stimulated by her global travels and the “American West,” Tory Burch created a truly awesome tribal meets bohemian beauty moment in her spring collection—(not to mention the clothes!) Mega-length fishtail braids and a minimalist approach to the makeup were the perfect complements to her departure from classic prep designs—the braids acted as an additional accessory. Eugene Soloman, who styled the hair for the show, told InStyle.com, “There are a lot of straw and weaved accessories in this collection, so I wanted the hair to have that look too.” Well, he can be sure we’ll be replicating these plaits ASAPit’s easier than it looks! We went backstage to get the complete breakdown—from hair to nails—so you can try your hand at creating the couture look at home. Click through our gallery to get the complete how-to, along with the products used backstage.

Runway Beauty Looks We Love: Zac Posen

Sep 10, 2012 @ 3:47 pm

From the lush lashes, to the bold face-framing brows, the look at Zac Posen’s Spring 2013 show was pure Hollywood glamour. “I took inspiration from a black and white photo of Lena Horne taken in the 1960s,” said makeup artist Kabuki, who used MAC products to create the sultry look. “The image captured her unique blend of strength and delicacy, echoing the play between structure and softness in Posen’s collection.” While many runway looks are hard to translate into real-life, Posen’s is the exception. The smoky eye and lush lashes are perfect for a night out, and can also be toned down to wear during the day. We went backstage to get the complete breakdown on the makeup, complete with the exact products used, so you can take it from runway to every day! Click through our gallery now to get the step-by-step instructions.

Runway Beauty Looks We Love: Monique Lhuillier

Sep 10, 2012 @ 2:30 pm

While The Little Mermaid remains a Disney classic, Monique Lhuillier’s spring collection re-imagined the meaning of “under the sea.” Striking cerulean blue and gold lids along with a wet-and-dry contrast hairstyle completed the aquatic illusion of Lhuillier’s designs. We went backstage to get the complete breakdown on the water-inspired makeup—from hair to nails—so you can try your hand at creating the couture look at home. Makeup artist, Val Garland, who styled the show, told InStyle.com:  “It’s all about the eye color. It’s a great shade for spring and I think women should have fun with their makeup.” Here’s to a bright, colorful season, indeed! Runway Beauty Looks We Love: Jason Wu

Sep 8, 2012 @ 2:05 pm

Taking inspiration from Helmut Newton, Jason Wu wowed crowds with an added touch of sexiness to his feminine designs. Plump cherry pouts, African braids and finger-waves strutted down the runway—giving his spring collection a freshly modern twist on classic beauty staples. We went backstage to get the complete breakdown—from hair to nails—so you can try your hand at creating the couture look at home. When asked to describe the girl this collection embodies, hairstylist Odile Gilbert, who created the intricate updo, told InStyle.com: “This girl is chic, sexy, and elegant.” We like the sound of that! Click through our gallery to get the complete how-to, along with the products used backstage.
