If you need further convincing that nail art is having a serious moment, look to the couture claws of New York Fashion Week for proof! We’ve been spotting some seriously covetable nail designs on and off the runway, so we put together a list of our favorite fashion week manicures so far. “Obviously we know that nails are an easy accessory. It’s not a haircut, it’s not a commitment, it’s not like coloring your hair, and it’s fun” said celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann, who created the nails for Kate Spade’s spring 2013 presentation. “You can totally change them, make them personal, and pair them with what you’re wearing on the weekend. It is a way to make yourself happy, for sure.” We agree! Click through our gallery to get a closer look at each of the manicures now.
Spring 2013 is all about bright eyes and even brighter ensembles for Kate Spade! Known for her cheerful designs, Spade’s spring 2013 line was jam-packed with bold color in feminine hues, with a lively beauty look to match. We went backstage to get the complete breakdown — from hair to nails — so you can try your hand at creating the couture look at home! And if you’re intimidated by the winged-out teal shadow, makeup artist Neil Scibelli, who created the edgy makeup, offers a tip: “The look is totally wearable if you pair it with something funky, and just be confident in it!” Click through our gallery to get the complete how-to, along with the exact products used.
It’s no secret that we love creative manicure effects, which is why we’re excited to hear that Deborah Lippmann just released magnetic nail polishes! Her three versatile shades impart a design on each digit when you hover a patterned magnet over a fresh layer of lacquer. To achieve the effect, just paint on two even coats, and while your nails are still wet, hold the magnet as close as you can without touching the polish. A few seconds should do the trick. The longer you keep the magnet in place, the more defined the pattern will be. Buy the set for $29 at deborahlippmann.com.

True Blood is sinking its teeth into HSN! The HBO show teamed up with the retailer to launch Forsaken, a line of vampire-inspired beauty and home products starting August 9th. “Even into its fifth season, True Blood continues to be wildly popular in pop culture so we are always looking to provide new ways for fans to engage with the brand,” James Costos, HBO’s Vice President of Global Licensing, told InStyle.com. “We felt a fragrance line that was elegant, mysterious and sensual lent itself naturally to the themes of the show.” The Forsaken collection includes a fragrance (developed by mega-perfume company Givaudan), a body cream, a body veil, a DL & Co. candle (featuring a lid with a fang on it) and diffusers, nail polishes with vampy names like “Let It Bleed” (which is scented!) by Deborah Lippmann, as well as the celebrity manicurist’s first-ever lipstick, fittingly a blood red hue named “Bite Me.” “The collection taps into the essence of the show—romantic, dark, mysterious and extremely sexy,” added Betsy Olum, the General Manager of Beauty and Merchandising Strategy for HSN. Click through the gallery to preview the entire lineup, and shop it for $25 to $60 on HSN and hsn.com starting August 9th.
Looks like crackle nail polish has some major competition! Magnetic nail lacquers have been making waves in the beauty world, and we’re obsessed with the instant brushed steel effect they create on our digits. The intricate design is surprisingly easy to achieve. Simply layer on two coats of polish, hold a patterned magnet over your nail, and voila! A salon-worthy effect in five seconds flat. We rounded up our favorite magnetic lacquers in steely metallic shades. Click through our gallery to see them all now!
Zoe Saldana is known as a fashion risk-taker, and when it comes to beauty, the Avatar star is equally “willing to try new things,” she told us. “One time, I colored the ends of my hair with rum. It turned them flaming red, and my mom had to cut them off. I smelled like liquor for weeks!” But now the Avon spokeswoman knows better. “Work with what you have and learn to be comfortable in your own skin,” she said. Click through our gallery to find out her must-have beauty products, and for more of our exclusive interview with Saldana, check out InStyle‘s September issue, on sale now!
Much like the gown trends we saw on the red carpet, many stars chose to paint their nails in rich fall hues, like dark navy blue and aubergine. Lea Michele had hers painted by celebrity nail guru Deborah Lippmann, who used a navy shade with a bright silver shimmer, Lady Sings the Blues, from Lippman’s eponymous line. January Jones, on the other hand, chose to contrast her bright electric blue gown with a dark aubergine hue. Lippmann also polished Jones’s nails with another shade from her collection, Dark Side of the Moon.
