First Look: Ruffian’s Collection for MAC!

May 17, 2012 @ 4:30 pm

Cult favorite New York clothing line Ruffian is known as much for their coveted fashion—Kirsten Dunst, Cate Blanchett, and Kate Moss are fans—as for the beauty looks born on their runway. Now that Ruffian Red is an established go-to crimson lip color, designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais are expanding to nails. They’ve collaborated with MAC to develop a collection of super-chic press-ons in varying takes on the signature Ruffian half-moon manicure. “Every season Claude and I start with the manicure idea and it really forms the collection,” Wolk told InStyle.com exclusively. “Ruffian is always about a story, about a movie, about a film. It’s cinematic.” The kits of 24 press-on nails are self-adhesive and will be available for a limited time on maccosmetics.com starting on June 18th. “There is something so Ruffian about the ephemeral, that it will last just for a moment,” said Wolk. View the entire collection in the gallery.

New Product Alert: Crystal Lip Balms

May 14, 2012 @ 2:00 pm

Your old-school lip balm just got a neon makeover! We’re loving the summery batch of crystal lip balms that just hit stores. Packaged in a translucent lipstick shape, these gel-like high-octane shades impart a sheer, glossy finish that can be layered to show off the color’s maximum impact. From Clarins’s hot pink ($25; clarinsusa.com), to DuWop’s sheer orange ($19; duwop.com), and Sephora’s punchy violet ($3; sephora.com), they’re a non-intimidating way to rock a neon pucker without feeling overdone. Plus, the ultra-hydrating formulas make the balms perfect for summer.

Remembering Vidal Sassoon, 1928 – 2012

Long before the era of the celebrity hairstylist, Vidal Sassoon—who died yesterday at 84—was a household name, pioneering the modern American hairstyle. He created the first wash-and-go cuts, liberating women from the time-consuming, super-sprayed styles of the ’50s. Sassoon opened his first London salon in 1954 leading to his collaboration with mother of the mod era, clothing designer Mary Quant. Motivated by clean, geometric lines, the “Sassoon bob” became the rage of the swinging ’60s. In 1968 he sheared Mia Farrow’s locks into her signature pixie for her role in Rosemary’s Baby. He also co-wrote one of the first healthy lifestyle books, “A Year of Beauty and Health,” which became a bestseller in 1975. The ’80s saw the development of his eponymous hair care line with the famous tag line, “If you don’t look good, we don’t look good.” In a BBC radio interview Sassoon said, “I woke up [in the hospital] one night smiling, I swear. And I thought, I’ve had the best adventure you could possibly have, for a kid that started from nowhere…So if I have to go now, I’m ready.
