MC Hammer on Joining Psy’s “Gangnam Style” at AMAs: I Brought the Pants out for This

Nov 19, 2012 @ 12:15 pm

After wondering who Korean pop sensation Psy‘s surprise guest would be at last night’s American Music Awards, the big reveal was far better than we could have ever imagined. Legendary rapper—and fellow dance craze innovator—MC Hammer joined Psy on stage to close the show with a medley of “2 Legit 2 Quit” and Psy’s viral YouTube hit “Gangnam Style.” InStyle.com caught up with Hammer after the performance to find out the biggest style question of the night: How did they decide to wear those iconic pants? “When Psy and I first talked about doing this together, one of the things he asked me was, ‘Hammer, are you going to wear the pants?,’” he told InStyle.com. “And I said, ‘Psy, I only wear the pants on special occasions.’ I call this a special occasion, so I brought the pants out!” We’re so glad he did.

Pink’s “Try” Performance at the American Music Awards: Watch the Video!

Nov 19, 2012 @ 11:32 am

One of the highlights from Sunday’s 40th Annual American Music Awards was Pink‘s performance of her newest single, “Try.” In an attempt to recreate the music video for the song—which shows the singer doing some seriously challenging contemporary dance moves alongside a male dancer, both slathered in a spectrum of colored paint—Pink opened her act by balancing upside-down on the shoulders of her dance partner, showcasing her incredible strength and flexibility right from the start. She then moved through a difficult piece of choreography, all while singing live, making her performance one of the best of the night. Watch the clip above and tell us what you think!

Carrie Underwood’s Fingerless Gloves: Love Them or Leave Them?

Nov 19, 2012 @ 11:00 am

Do Carrie Underwoods hands need protection on stage? Seems so! The country star, who just picked up the Favorite Country Album honor at last night’s American Music Awards, performed her new single “Two Black Cadillacs” wearing fingerless leather gloves by Johan Ku to accessorize her Rachael Cassar black tulle dress. And it’s a look she loves: We first spotted her wearing a studded, bedazzled gunmetal pair—also fingerless—to match her Tsemaye Binitie gown when she belted out her album’s title track “Blown Away” at the Country Music Awards earlier this month. Do you like the look? Tell us by voting in the poll below!

The promos for the American Music Awards promised our playlist would come alive—and it did! With 17 performances throughout the three-hour broadcast, we had our heads bobbing to the music all night, which is why we rounded up our favorite performances for you right here. Nicki Minaj, who won for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Album, wowed with a winter wonderland performance of her new single “Freedom,” No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani epitomized her new song “Looking Hot” with an Emilio Pucci crystal-embellished houndstooth jacket, and Korean pop sensation Psy shocked the audience when he brought out special guest MC Hammer for a “2 Legit 2 Quit” and “Gangham Style” dance mash-up to close the show. “With Psy I knew right away that he’s a good guy,” MC Hammer told reporters after the performance. “I told him dance has only moved the planet four times. James Brown with his dance shifted the planet. Michael Jackson with his dance shifted the planet. Yours truly, Hammertime, shifted the planet. And now Psy shifted the planet. So, to be with somebody who shifted the planet, and have fun—I loved doing it and we had a great time together.” Click through to see all our favorite performances!

AMAs 2012: Backstreet Boys Consult Each Other for Their Outfits

Nov 18, 2012 @ 10:29 pm
Backstreet BoysKevin Mazur/AMA2012/WireImage

After almost two decades since the Backstreet Boys first formed, they still have each other’s backs—especially with fashion. “Before shows we always get ready together,” Howie Dorough (in an Anthony Franco suit) told InStyle.com of the looks he and (from left) AJ McLean, Nick Carter, Brian Littrell (in Moods of Norway), and Kevin Richardson chose for tonight’s American Music Awards. “Today we all got ready separately and then we came together in a hotel room and checked each other out,” Howie added. “We polished each other’s shoes!” And do they ever veto each other’s outfits? “We normally do that to AJ!” said Brian. “He shows up in some crazy stuff! We’re like, ‘Uh, buddy, can you change outfits?’” So, does he listen? “He normally doesn’t want to listen to us, but that’s okay,” said Howie. Sounds like AJ still has his bad-boy reputation!

AMAs 2012: Which of Taylor Swift’s Two Performance Looks Do You Prefer?

Nov 18, 2012 @ 10:02 pm

Scandalous! Taylor Swift pulled off a wardrobe change during her performance of her new single “I Knew You Were Trouble” at tonight’s American Music Awards. She began in the flowing white sleeveless Ophira gown from evening wear designer Catherine Deane’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection, only for her dancers to rip off the dress revealing a red corset and black tutu skirt, paired with a Jewelry by Nola vintage Chaplin rhinestone necklace with mixed gold chains, halfway through the song. These two looks off show off two very different sides of the 22-year-old—white, pure, typical Taylor and a more mature, feisty Taylor. Tell us: Which of her two looks do you prefer? Vote in the poll!

AMAs 2012: Colbie Caillat Designed Her Own Look

Nov 18, 2012 @ 9:35 pm

Colbie Caillat tried her hand at designing for the 40th Annual American Music Awards! “It’s a dress my stylist Anthony Franco designed with me,” the singer told InStyle.com of her silver halter gown with a plunging neckline. “I had a dress, but it didn’t look right,” she explained. “We were exploring different ideas and I said, ‘Oh! Can we make one?!’” And they did—sourcing the material and pinning it the morning of the awards. “With the AMAs, it’s all about being you, it’s about representing yourself.” So, is this the start of more Colbie Caillat designs? “I’d love to get into designing, but right now I’m singing.”
