Trend to Try: Halo Braid Headbands

May 22, 2012 @ 5:45 pm

Hollywood is having a Heidi moment with stars like Lea Michele, Sarah Gadon, and Alicia Keys opting for braided updos. “This style looks great from every angle, and exudes a fun and youthful vibe,” said hairstylist Marcus Francis, who created Gadon’s halo-plait look for the Cannes Film Festival. To try the look yourself, Francis recommends prepping hair with a volumizer (he loves Phyto Volume Actif, $35; sephora.com) to build up thickness, then adding a spritz of texturizer to keep the braid from slipping. Amp up the style and add lift by loosening the front twist with a tail comb before securing with hair pins. “This creates a slightly more dressy version to the headband braid because of the height,” Francis added. Tell us: Would you try this look?

Grammys 2012 Hair Trend: Pretty Pompadours

Feb 13, 2012 @ 11:00 am

Kate Beckinsale, Katy Perry, and Alicia Keys complemented their ensembles with chic mini-pompadours at last night’sGrammy Awards. While Perry’s and Keys’s looks were more suited for the red carpet, a bumped-up ponytail is flattering for everyday wear. Pompadours work best on clean, blown out hair, so be sure that strands are sleek before trying this style out on your own. Start by separating the top layer of your hair, and using a soft-bristle comb, tease at the crown to create lift. Smooth a section of sleek, unteased hair over it to cover the backcombing, and pull back into a ponytail. For more celebrity-inspired hairstyle tips, click through the gallery.

Celebrities Will Sign Off Twitter for World AIDS Day

Nov 29, 2010 @ 1:42 pm

Don’t be surprised if this Wednesday, your Twitter feed is surprisingly silent. On December 1st, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Hudson and other celebrities have pledged to take a break from social media to draw awareness to World Aids Day, and specifically to Alicia Keys’s Keep a Child Alive campaign. “This is such a direct and instantly emotional way…to get people to pay attention,” the singer told the Associated Press. The stars will sign back on once the charity raises $1 million. To do your part, make a one-time $5 donation to Keep a Child Alive by texting 9099. The charge will appear on your next phone bill.
