Our favorite looks this week—plucked from our Look of the Day section—took fundamental colorways and added a dose of sparkle. Taylor Swift vamped up the Grammys red carpet in an ethereal J. Mendel dress, Zoe Saldana wore a peek-a-boo Alexander McQueen LWD, Beyoncé worked every angle of her embellished Elie Saab Haute Couture gown, Michelle Williams wowed in a Prada column, and Olivia Wilde watched the Calvin Klein runway show in a periwinkle design by the label. Side Effects: Rooney Mara and Catherine Zeta-Jones on Their Psych-Inspired Wardrobes

Feb 1, 2013 @ 11:28 am

Catherine-Zeta Jones and Rooney Mara looked ultra-glamorous wearing Michael Kors and Alexander McQueen, respectively, at last night’s New York premiere of their thriller Side Effects, hosted by The Cinema Society and Michael Kors. But for their roles in the movie—in which Mara plays a severely depressed woman with a secret and Zeta-Jones her former psychiatrist—their wardrobe took a more disturbed turn. “When I’m feeling sad or lazy, it’s hard for me to get dressed. You just want to be comfortable,” Mara told InStyle.com on the red carpet. “Me and [costume designer] Susan Lyell talked a lot about wanting [my character Emily] to be in comfortable, loose clothes. That was really important.” Zeta-Jones had a different approach. “It was a fine line, because I play a psychiatrist and am a woman,” Zeta-Jones said. “Obviously there’s a danger and a sexiness to my character. So we didn’t want to push it too much. I wanted to have some sexiness to her, but keep it in the realm of a doctor.” Wardrobe really does inform a character! The edge-of-your-seat film opens nationwide February 8.

Sarah Burton, Dresser of Mom-To-Be Kate Middleton, Is Pregnant!

Jan 18, 2013 @ 11:18 am

Sarah Burton is pregnant with twins! The creative director of Alexander McQueen—and the woman mainly responsible for dressing a pregnant Kate Middleton in all those looks—has announced that she is expecting. She will take maternity leave from her post, meaning that the iconic British brand will skip its upcoming Autumn/Winter 2013 show during Paris Fashion Week, which takes place in March. No word yet on just when Burton’s expected due date is, but we’re hoping it’s somewhere around July!

Golden Globes: Amanda Seyfried Is Still Looking for Her Dress

The Golden Globes are only four days away, and presenter Amanda Seyfried is still on the hunt for her dress! “When I land in L.A. tomorrow I’m going to my stylist’s house and she’ll show me dresses,” Seyfried told reporters at the National Board of Review Awards in New York last night, where she accepted the Best Ensemble honor with her Les Miserables co-stars (and her pals) Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne. Given that her style includes a range of designer looks—such as a studded peach Bottega Veneta look for night’s event, a purple Alexander McQueen design, a flirty red Prabal Gurung look, and a sexy Balenciaga LBD, we predict she’ll choose another high-fashion piece to take the stage for Sunday’s show. Her only hint: “I think Stella McCartney is always doing something fun.” Could she be in Stella on Globes night? We’ll have to wait and see!

What Does a Duchess Wear to Play Field Hockey? Alexander McQueen!

Nov 30, 2012 @ 3:56 pm

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge not only marries in McQueen, she plays field hockey in it, too! The royal wore a navy-and-green tartan print coat by Alexander McQueen (just one of her many great toppers) to visit St. Andrews, her old boarding school in Pangbourne, England today. We love her choice of tartan (the same pattern is on different items at alexandermcqueen.com), as it was a nice nod to the time when she had to wear school uniforms. And it wasn’t just her outfit that put Catherine in a nostalgic mood. She took to the school’s grassy knoll to play some field hockey—in black calf-high suede boots, no less!
