Just like we shed our scarves and heavy jackets at the end of every winter, we also start opting for lighter layers of foundation. Spring is all about dewy, barely-there makeup that almost looks like your clean, naked skin — only better. Such an effortless look requires products that are every bit as low-key, so we put together a list of our 14 favorites! Nicole Richie has been getting busy in the beauty world lately — in late February, the star posted an Instagram that was altered to look as if she dyed her hair purple, only to make the dramatic change in real life a few days later. We’ve seen Richie sport blunt bangs, the long bob, and a wide variety of updos, but her pastel violet hair is the most dramatic change she’s made yet, and the coordinating color of her NO Rules fragrance has us wondering: Did her new scent bring on the change? Possibly! The exotic blend of Mediterranean orange flower, purple jasmine, Turkish almond blossom, and vanilla bean is housed in a frosted lavender bottle, and was inspired by Richie’s carefree attitude to fashion — a philosophy mirrored with her outlook on hair, we’re sure. “I try not to go by any rules, especially when I’m talking about mixing prints,” she says. “I’m so inspired by the ’60s and ’70s, and their rule was that there were no rules.” Whatever sparked the idea, we definitely applaud the star’s bold move, and we’re glad to see her purple reign continue in both the hair and fragrance realms. Bye-bye, blonde hair! Yesterday in New York City, Kate Bosworth was spotted on the set of Still Alice, rocking new red strands. Bosworth made the dramatic change to get into character for the upcoming film, and the last time we’ve seen this side of the star was back in 2010, when she donned a bolder shade of red for The Warrior’s Way. While she’s dabbled in even darker colors before, the actress prefers herself in paler shades of the spectrum. “I felt more solemn as a brunette. It doesn’t make sense, but I don’t take things as seriously when I’m a blonde,” she told InStyle previously. Because her current auburn has more of a strawberry blonde effect, we think it’s perfect middle-ground between the two hues, not to mention a gorgeous complement to her skin tone. Who knew a spontaneous decision could make the biggest statement of the night! Next to Lupita Nyong’o‘s Cinderella-esque gown, Jared Leto‘s ombre strands also ranked among the most buzzed-about style moments at the Oscars, but the look could have turned out much different from the gorgeous waves we saw on the red carpet. Leto and his hairstylist Chase Kusero, who used Vidal Sassoon products, were originally going to go for a side-parted low bun with a wet, mirror-like finish, but at the very last minute, the duo opted for a low-key look that worked with the actor’s natural texture. We loved his loose texture and the subtle graduation in color so much, we started to wonder how the style would look on us — which is why we added it to our Hollywood Makeover Tool! Are you curious to see how Leto’s ombre waves will flatter you? Simply upload your picture to our Hollywood Makeover Tool to start, and once the style is in place, share your makeover with your friends on Facebook and Twitter to see what they think. You can even upload your new look to Instagram as a MakeoverGram, and if you’re inspired to make a more permanent change, load the style on your mobile phone or iPad to bring to your hairstylist. Gwyneth Paltrow Gives Another Beauty Brand Her Seal of Approval With Her Latest Brand Ambassador RoleMar 4, 2014 @ 1:31 pm
As many of us who frequent goop.com know well, the Paltrow seal of approval is certainly an honor that must be earned, and Restorsea is the latest skincare line to get the nod with Gwyneth Paltrow as the brand ambassador. Famed for its all-natural formulations that deliver major results, Restorsea takes on an inspirational “the best is yet to come” approach, empowering women to take pride in their age rather than constantly chasing the fountain of youth. “I was ecstatic when I learned that Restorsea is natural,” Paltrow says. “I love how it smells, that it works, and the fact that it is a brand started by a woman entrepreneur. I never promote anything I don’t use, love, and believe in, and I’m thrilled to support the brand and its mission to encourage women to embrace their age.”
Each of the products are infused with a potent dose of brown algae, vitamin C, and a natural enzyme released by salmon upon hatching, and since Paltrow is a certified fan, you can rest assured knowing the line will live up to its claims of boosting radiance, elasticity, and hydration. “Over time, I saw a real difference — a kind of freshness and dewiness,” the star adds. Shop the full range of Restorsea’s face and body products now at restorsea.com.

This spring, your tried-and-true smoky eye is getting a heavy metal twist! Gilded accents were hot all over the spring runways, with the pretty peepers at Gucci and Jason Wu ranking at the top as our favorite (and most wearable!) looks. “Gold is the new neutral, and it’s more interesting and has more life than beige or taupe,” says InStyle beauty director Kahlana Barfield in the above video. The metallic eye couldn’t be easier to master at home — all you need to recreate it is your favorite 24-Karat shadow, a brown liner pencil, a rich bronze hue, and a soft blending brush. “I think a gold smoky eye is far more interesting than a traditional black or grey smoky eye, and it’s a great neutral, so anyone can pull it off,” she adds. Find out exactly how to bring the runway effect to your everyday routine by watching the video above, then get more makeup inspiration by clicking through our gallery!
The perfect beauty complement to the Oscars red carpet? A red lip, of course! For the 86th Annual Academy Awards stars like Emma Watson, Anna Kendrick, and Naomi Watts reminded all of us why the crimson lip is such a classic look — it works on everybody, and adds a touch of Old Hollywood glamour to even the most-modern ensembles. “We wanted to make a statement with the makeup, and show a more playful side while still keeping true to her classic beauty,” says Kendrick’s makeup artist Sara Glick, who used Dior’s Fluid Stick in Open Me ($35; dior.com starting March 15) on the star. “I wanted her to stop the show by surprising everyone with a bright lip.” Mission accomplished!
If you want to follow in each stars’ lead, line your lips with a nude pencil rather than searching for an exact match. Many red lip liners can appear darker than your lipstick and create the dreaded stenciled effect, but a nude pencil will blend in with your natural lip color and provide a flat base for the hue to adhere. When working with statement lipsticks, make sure to apply the color using a lip brush to create the most-precise shape possible, then clean up around the edges with a concealer that matches your skin color to hide any unexpected smudges.

While the glamorous gowns lining the venue were the main focus at last night’s Oscars red carpet, the elegant beauty looks complementing each ensemble certainly didn’t go unnoticed. To mirror the princess feeling of her Prada gown, first-time Oscar winner and belle of the ball Lupita Nyong’o added a diamond-studded Fred Leighton headband to her cute pixie, which she complemented with a pop-of-color lip. Charlize Theron, on the other hand, played up her eyes, opting for a Twiggy-inspired white liner and lush lashes, while Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett paired her soft retro curls with a luminous complexion. But they aren’t the only stars who won big in the beauty department — after watching the entire ceremony and taking notes on our favorites, we rounded up the prettiest makeup and most-elegant hairstyles of the night, along with tips from the pros who created each look.
