It was pure fan-demonium at last night’s premiere of 22 Jump Street in New York City. Crowds gathered outside the AMC Lincoln Square theater with the hope of catching catching a glimpse or snapping a selfie with one of the stars of the film, and rewarded they were. Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube, and Amber Stevens were all on-hand at the FIJI water and Entertainment Weekly hosted event to celebrate the release of their upcoming sequel, which follows accident-prone police officers Jenko (Tatum) and Schmidt (Hill) when they go deep undercover at a local college. As the duo hilariously struggles to crack the case, they also question their partnership.
The movie is filled with laugh-out-loud moments and plenty of shenanigans—as was the time spent shooting it. “Every day on set I was just trying to make Jonah’s day harder,” Tatum says of his co-star. “It wasn’t one specific prank, but pretty much every day I would play any fun prank on him that I could.”
Beyond its comedic moments, the movie also sees a fair share of daring stunts, though Tatum and Hill did not get to perform much of the action themselves. “There were some actual, real hardcore stunts that I got to do,” Tatum says. “Generally they never let you do any of that stuff because in the smallest stunt you can do something like twist an ankle or hurt yourself.”
Tatum looked extra dapper in a gray plaid suit and worked the room like a pro, but noted that the red carpet doesn’t always bring warm feelings. “This is a more relaxed event, but sometimes you’re so nervous walking in,” the actor shares. “Everyone applauds and is there to see you and you’re film, but you’re kind of feeling like you’re a gladiator going into the arena and that you could possibly, more than likely, die.”
