Still not sure what to get mom for Mother’s Day? With the holiday rapidly approaching, we have the perfect last minute idea: Bake her a sweet treat.
“Here’s the thing,” Duff Goldman, chef and co-owner of the Los Angeles-based Duff’s Cakemix, tells InStyle. “You can buy mom stuff and that’s cool. But when we were little kids, what did she love more? A card that you bought at the store or a card that you drew with your crayons? Make your mom a cake for Mother’s Day and it’s like your own handwriting.”
Here are Goldman’s DIY tips on how to bake the perfect Mother’s Day cake:
1. Throw out the rule book
“Our cakes are incredibly unique. What sets them apart is the fact that we have no regard for rules, because there are no rules. We like people to really go to town and have fun and be creative. Just because something hasn’t been done before, doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be done.”
2. Visual your final product (before you begin)
“The biggest thing you need to do before you even bake your cake is draw a picture of what you want to make. That way, you know what to buy at the store. You won’t be in the middle of decorating your cake and think, ‘oh, I totally forgot yellow! I can’t make a duck anymore because now I have only orange, so I guess I’ll make a peep.’ That is the best advice I can give anyone.”
3. Turn to fashion trends for inspiration
“Don’t be afraid of pinks and pastels. For for a while, people were getting a little afraid of pastel and using green or taupe or neutral. It’s nice to kind of see pastels coming back.”
4. Think outside the box
“We have a Duff’s tie-dye cake mix and the cake literally comes out tie-dye. Let the artistic process happen. I grew up with graffiti artists and try to stay relevant by looking at graffiti, design, architecture, Japanese pop culture. Like airbrushing a cake is one of those things that a lot of people are really afraid of. But the second you start doing it, you realize it’s not that hard.”
