Jennifer Lawrence may have had a few awkward moments on the red carpet (and we love her for them!), but the awkward growing-out phase of her pixie cut is nowhere in sight. After taking her long strands to a dramatic crop in November of last year, Lawrence has been looking chic every inch of the way to the chin-skimming bob she debuted in New York City yesterday. When it comes to growing out a cut, the general idea has been to go as long as you could without a salon visit, but regular trims can actually ease the tricky in-between stage.

Celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan, who is Jennifer Aniston’s and Michelle Williams’ mane man, recommends visiting your stylist every 10 weeks to get the shape touched up. “Cut the back and the bangs, shaping hair into a bob as the sides catch up in length,” he told InStyle previously. Once your layers have a little length, you can experiment with off-center buns and ponytails — each style gives the illusion of a polished cut from the front, while keeping stray wisps hidden in the back. Growing out your bangs always proves to be the most-challenging part, but luckily, a little product goes a long way! Just a dab of pomade can tame pesky baby hairs, or impart a tousled, roughed-up finish.

Also, never underestimate the power of a well-placed hair accessory. Headbands or hair clips can rein in unruly wisps that can’t be tucked behind your ears just yet, and once your bangs reach cheekbone-level, you can straighten them and blend them in with the rest of your cut.
