While the Anti-Acne Light Therapy Mask by Illumask ($30; ulta.com) may look more like a prop from the next Star Wars movie, the device promises a clear complexion after 15-minute daily sessions under the red and blue LED lights. We asked InStyle.com Assistant Editor Marianne Mychaskiw to try out the space-age skincare tool, and report back with the results.

“Chalk it up to the acne problems I battled back in middle school, but I’m a little obsessed with skincare, particularly products that promise a clear complexion. I’ve tried just about every skin treatment and mask on the market, but never one that made me look like a member of Daft Punk, so naturally, I was intrigued. I took the Illumask device home over the weekend to try out, and although I’m still in the beginning stages of treatment, I did notice results.

The secret lies in the red and blue LED lights, which target and kill acne-causing bacteria while healing existing spots, and promoting a more-even skin tone. All week long I had been prepping my apartment for my mom and brother to visit during their spring break, and the rounds of intense cleaning I had been doing triggered a few stress breakouts. By Sunday night, I noticed that the activity had subsided, and was almost completely gone by Monday morning. The mask didn’t interfere with the retinol-infused moisturizer I used in conjunction to the treatment (My patience runs pretty thin when it comes to acne), and helped to speed up the repair process.

I’m not sure if I’ll incorporate the mask into my daily routine just yet, but I’ll definitely be using it to tackle any spontaneous breakouts in the future.”
