Nike has teamed up with Japanese artist Yuko Kanatani on a new ‘Tights of the Moment’ franchise that celebrates the coming together of artistic design and athleticism for spring 2014. The latest vibrant print in the collaboration, Midnight Craftwork, was inspired by Kanatani’s own midnight world—the time of day in which she can be alone with her art, free from distraction. Embroidery is one of the artistic mediums that dominates the Kanatani’s attention most after the sun has set, and the artist envisioned women such as herself working on their embroidery into the night when designing this striking pattern.
To create the eye-popping print Kanatani sewed beads, spangles, candy wrappers, and ribbons onto pieces of fabric, then combined photographs of the resulting embroidery with hand drawings done in acrylic paint. Rather than simply making a pattern for the collection, Kanatani used a body map to position her art on the tights in order to accentuate the moving body, while flattering the muscles and heating and cooling zones. Made from Nike Dri-FIT fabric, the material pulls sweat away from the skin to keep you dry and comfortable. Working out has never been so stylish!
The Midnight Craftwork print will be featured on tights, a sports bra, and running shoe—available on nike.com in limited quantities beginning February 28th.
