First, sweatshirts got a makeover, and now it looks as though sweatpants have too. No longer relegated for those lazy stay-at-home days or intensive gym sessions, drawstring loungers are seeing the light of day—an effort pioneered by some major designers for fall/winter 2014. Ralph Lauren added a touch of luxe to a pair of white joggers, pairing it with a soft-yet-sharp pale pink double-breasted blazer. The Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte pushed the envelope this season, not only by screen-printing Star Wars characters on floor-sweeping gowns, but also by tucking sweaters into high-waisted sweats. And at Ruffian, Brian Wolk and Claude Morais took a walk on the glam side, elevating casual bottoms into evening wear status.
At Alexander Wang‘s super high-tech show, it was nice to see that sweats hold a special place in the future. On the other end of the spectrum, Michael Kors and Scott Sternberg (of Band of Outsiders) had the same idea, playing it casual with matching sets. Anything that fuses style and comfort has our vote.
