Times are a changin’ on Nashville! This week’s episode was packed with dramatic twists for each character, but as always our favorite country ladies faced each obstacle stylishly thanks to costume designer Susie DeSanto.
For the first big dramatic moment of the episode, DeSanto focused on Juliette’s (Hayden Panettiere) look for her induction into the Grand Ole Opry. After her recent PR nightmare, she must decide how she wants to deal with the flurry of bad press—either take this moment to apologize like the studio wants her to, or stay true to herself, and in true Juliette fashion, she refused to back down. “When we went to do this outfit there was a lot of conversation: Should she try to be the good girl and go back to the pretty dresses or not,” says DeSanto. Ultimately, they decided to steer away from that going for a black lace embellished Temperley top, instead. “With this outfit you want the audience to believe that she’ll say the words that [studio head] Jeff wants her to say, and apologize to her fans for her behavior,” DeSanto continues. “The top made her look like she was dressing the part but the leather pants and the McQueen gold boots were totally fierce.”
But Juliette wasn’t the only one who had to navigate new terrain! Not only did Rayna (Connie Britton) make her romance with Luke Wheeler (Will Chase) public, but she also performed her new single for the first time at a NASCAR race. “What people wear to NASCAR is super duper casual,” says DeSanto. “I wanted her to look like a star, but not overdressed. Not too much glitz, a little bit rock ‘n roll.” Goal achieved! Britton wore a floral skull Alexander McQueen tee, which she topped off with a stellar white Haute Hippe moto jacket. “I wanted to do something that would light her up without using sequins and rhinestone and that jacket fit the bill.”
And while Scarlett (Clare Bowen) was not in the public eye this episode, her burgundy Free People top really informed her characters mood. “Her journey is all about being an artist and finding her away and expressing herself through music and poetry,” DeSanto tells us. “I love that the color as a metaphor for what it’s going through as an artist.” For a closer look at this week’s looks, click through the gallery, and be sure to tune into ABC next week at 10/9c for an all-new Nashville.
