Juice Generation founder Eric Helms is Lively and Watts’ go-to guy when it comes to whipping up vitamin-rich juices, and a slew of other celebs (including Michelle Williams, Hilary Swank, and Jason Bateman) are also hooked the so-called “juice glow.”
In Helms’ new book, The Juice Generation, which contains more than 100 recipes for vegetable and fruit juices, smoothies, and tonics, in addition to self-help tips on how to turn your kitchen into a liquid laboratory, he shares his star customers’ favorite juice recipes—like Williams and Lively—plus their raving commentary.
Not only did we delve into the book—which is broken down into three phases that takes you from beginner to experienced in regards to flavor and skill complexity—we spoke with Helms to squeeze out some of his secrets to staying healthy during the long winter months, plus we scored all the ingredients of Lively’s favorite green juice.
Which juice do you recommend if you are feeling the winter blues?
Make it tasty, make sure it makes you happy. The only way you’ll keep on top of your winter regimen – and your New Years resolutions – is if you commit to changes that you actually enjoy. Don’t start training for a marathon if you don’t like running, and don’t make drastic changes to your diet that you can’t stick with. That’s what’s great about juicing: it’s tasty and good for you, and you can customize any juice or smoothie to dazzle your palate.
What’s the secret to staying on top of your health game during the dull winter?
I’m not suggesting you overhaul your entire diet. Supplement your regular habits with a daily fresh juice. Even that seemingly small gesture makes a big difference – and will spice up your winter blues. 1 cup kale, 2 leaves swiss chard, 1.2 cup parsley, 1/2 small beet, 1/2 cup pineapple, 2 medium green apples, 1 sprig fresh mint, 1/2 medium lemon, peeled. Blend it together and serve!
