From Bikram to Hatha, there are a ton of various types of yoga out there. But one of the trendiest types to hit the fitness scene is hot power flow yoga, a Vinyasa-style class done in a heated room to popular music. We asked InStyle.com’s Kim Peiffer to sweat it out and report back. See how she fared below. 

I’m a sucker for any type of workout and have pretty much tried them all—my motto is, the more intense, the better. In fact I’m the kind of fitness fanatic who often feels gipped if I don’t leave a class drenched in sweat. But my workout regime in 2013 was getting a little too intense. Treadmill classes, heavy weight-lifting sessions, and training for a marathon left my body in aching pain, begging for me to let off. Did I? Of course not. Skip the gym? No way. Instead, I discovered the perfect balance of hard core and rejuvenating in the form of heated Vinyasa yoga.

I had done plenty of hot yoga in the past, but after feeling bored with the same routine in Bikram classes (a series of 26 posture movements done in a heated room), I was on the hunt for something fresher and a little more modern. The solution? A trip to Prana Power Yoga in New York City’s Union Square ($18 per class, pranapoweryoga.com for info). Enter into the cozy lobby and you’re immediately greeted by a chipper staffer, who hands you a towel (you’ll need it), a water bottle (ditto), and a yoga mat. Then, you open the double doors to the studio and a wave of warmth instantly hits your body.

The hour and 15 minute class, done in a room heated to approximately 95-99 degrees, begins with relaxing poses, then moves into a Vinyasa-style flow class done to modern music (think pop, dance, and even some hip hop thrown in the mix). You sweat (oh, how you sweat), move, and stretch your entire body while absorbing the energy of the entire room—and even the super sweaty yogi right next to you. Afterwards, as you lay on the mat at the end of class, you feel incredibly calm, cleansed and revitalized from head to toe. The heat helps to open up your muscles and allows you to stretch deeper into each movement.

The next morning, I felt something I haven’t felt from a workout in quite awhile—happy and refreshed, not beaten down and drained. Was I sore? You bet. Did I burn a ton of calories? Definitely. But did I also cleanse my body and mind? Absolutely. It’s my new obsession, and I’ll definitely be back for more this winter.
