Cameron Diaz has one of the best bodies in Hollywood. So when we heard that she was writing a book about nutrition, fitness, and caring for your body, we immediately pre-ordered it. The end result, The Body Book: The Law of Hunger, the Science of Strength, and Other Ways to Love Your Amazing Body, available now, excitingly exceeded our expectations.
We caught up with the star to chat about the experience of writing her first book, her best piece of healthy living advice for women, and what BFF Drew Barrymore is really like.
What made you want to write this book?
Fitness is a huge part of my life. It was just a consistency that I made sure happened for my own purposes because it was important to me. It would help to ground me; it would help me be more productive. As you grow older, you learn how important that is and what function it really has in your life. And then I really started paying attention to nutrition as I got older, especially in my mid-thirties. Unless it is something that you are really into, nutrition is not something that we are taught about ourselves, and it is so important. It was just something that I thought ‘Why haven’t we been taught this from grade one? Why don’t we learn what the science of our body is?’ And it is just that. This book is just a science book. I am not preaching. There is no ‘eat like this’ or ‘eat these things and lose 10 pounds.’ There is no fitness program. It is really just about this is the way that your body works.
Are nutrition and fitness something you talk a lot about with your friends?
All of my girlfriends I work with, we all live out of trailers or some form of it. When we are working, we work a 12-hour day. And if we don’t procure food ourselves, we eat basically catering food, which is fine, but we only get to choose from what they have on that day. And that is all of our fuel for all day long. It is just not the right option. So what we do is we try to think ahead, and we bring the food that we want to eat and we keep it refrigerated. We prepare it how we can and it keeps us going. So we talk about food all day long. We are unique! We have to plan and think ahead. Everybody does. That is the point of the book!
What part of the book do you hope women share with their friends?
I think that nutrition is very powerful. This is something women struggle with, especially when they think that there are things they are not supposed to eat. If they are not knowledgeable about their nutrition, the body that they have is not the body that is really, truly theirs. If you give yourself balance, you see that you will start to have the body that you are meant to have.
What do you think is the best piece of advice from the book?
I don’t think of anything as depriving myself. I think of it as, ‘Well, if I am not having this, I am giving myself something that I want even more than that.’ I think that that is a good mental tool for women.
Your friend Drew Barrymore also has a book coming out. Did you guys discuss your projects with each other?
Absolutely! [Find It in Everything] is something that she has been tracking and doing for a long time, so for her to make it into a project that she can share, it is really symbolic of her because that is Drew. She does find love in everything. She finds beauty in everything.
Her book is a collection of photographs that feature heart-shaped objects and patterns. What can you say about her heart?
She has the most amazing heart. She is one of my closest girlfriends, but the way she loves the people around her is really special. She is so giving of herself and so accepting of others. She has created this community for herself. She didn’t really have a strong family, so friends are her family. She really loves on that level of just unconditional love. And her friends around her love her in that way as well. She is one big heart, Drew! She doesn’t even wear it on her sleeve, it’s like she is just a heart.
Do you think you’ll write another book?
Writing was my main focus over New Year’s . All of my friends had left town, and I was sitting there in front of the computer and I was just going to do my work. I really love this opportunity of being insular as a writer that I was like, ‘I’m going to have to figure out more things to write because this is so fun!’
