In last night’s winter finale of Nashville our favorite country ladies continued to deal with tons of drama on and offstage, but costume designer Susie DeSanto was there to make sure they had all the fashion armor they needed. This morning InStyle.com chatted with DeSanto to get her exclusive rundown of the winter finale looks starting with Scarlett (Clare Bowen) whose dealing with the discovery of Gunnar (Sam Palladio) and Zoey’s (Chaley Rose) relationship, “this really pretty dress is one we had last year—Clare and I both like to go back to those vintage dresses when Scarlett is trying to hold on to something from her past,” she said.

Meanwhile, Rayna (Connie Britton) continued to take her stance against her record label and Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) dealt with public backlash over an affair. However, coming to Juliette’s rescue was Avery (Jonathan Jackson) who stepped up on stage to get her through her performance, a set where her wardrobe played an important role according to DeSanto, “this look was about taking control again, being herself and it was kind of a screw you to the press—it sets up what’s coming next. This is an evolution of sorts for Juliette’s look, this is her establishing what her audience will see.”And make sure to tweet your congratulations to @haydenpanettier who was nominated today for a Golden Globe award!
