It was the word heard ’round the world—the Oxford Dictionaries has officially dubbed “selfie” 2013’s Word of the Year, beating out Miley Cyrus‘s “twerk,” which had a late in the year resurgence. But it was the term used to describe the social media self-portrait that truly captivated English speakers from the United States to Australia—coincidently where the word originated. “It seems like everyone who is anyone has posted a selfie somewhere on the Internet,” Oxford Dictionaries said in their blog post to announce the news. And they’re right: From Bradley Cooper and Gerard Butler to the Obamas, it seems as if most people have gotten in on the fun–we even included a category for “Most Glam Selfie” in our first-ever Social Media Awards.
