Nicola Formichetti has launched his first capsule collection for Diesel. As the brand’s newly appointed artistic director (he held the same title previously at Thierry Mugler), he tapped into Diesel’s 35-year historical archive to launch a 45 piece collection—aptly named #DieselTribute—comprised of both men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, denim, accessories, and intimates based on the themes of denim and leather. “This collection is my homage to the DNA of Diesel,” Formichetti said. “Visiting the Diesel factories in Italy was incredible. The decision to use these found materials from the archive in a new way was immediate. These new, limited edition and artisanal explorations of denim and leather are two very important steps into designing the future of Diesel.” Formichetti went a step further and took Diesel’s denim to a whole new level by having garments assembled entirely by hand and constructed piece-by-piece with manual stud and hand-stitched patch applications. Going hand-in-hand with the collection’s launch, Formichetti teamed up with renowned British photographer, Nick Knight, to create portrait campaigns shot entirely on an iPhone to showcase the fearless Diesel spirit. The full collection will be released in two parts, the denim capsule—which is now available—will be followed by the leather collection due out in February 2014 in select Diesel stores. We can’t wait to see what he does next.
