On last night’s Dancing with the Stars, Karina Smirnoff and Corbin Bleu looked to the mega-hit HBO show Game of Thrones as inspiration for their Viennese Waltz routine. The partners included sharp movements in their unconventional choreography to truly tap into the world of Thrones, and more specifically the story of Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen.
“We wanted to stay true to the show’s characters with our performance and costumes,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com exclusively. Bleu wore a long braid, black eyeliner, and faux tattoos to channel his inner barbarian, while Smirnoff donned a beige silk skirt with a gold rubber bodice. “I originally wanted the top to look like a metal corset, but I wouldn’t have been able to move,” Smirnoff told us. She chose to emphasize the upper half of her costume with wire and horse hair that extended from her neck to her shoulders. “It looked very powerful, and that’s what we were ultimately going for.”
Though the pair scored low in their performance, Bleu and Smirnoff won the show’s first-ever Switch-Up Challenge, which prompted the eight teams to improvise routines in real time to different genres of music. The winning dancers would be awarded four additional points to their overall score. Bleu and Smirnoff came out on top, and ended the night with a score of 27/30. Surprisingly, due to a voting error following last week’s show, no one was eliminated this week.
Tune in next Monday night at 8/7c on ABC for the live results show.
