In case you haven’t heard by now, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney‘s film Gravity is an out-of-this-world (literally) space thriller and just days after it opened in theaters everywhere on Friday, it broke box office records with an October weekend opening of $55.6 million. The Alfonso Cuarón-directed film had us on the edge of our seats for the full hour and 31 minutes—sometimes in moments of pure silence (because in space, there is no noise). We watched as Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) and veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) fought to survive after a disaster destroys their shuttle and they are left with no contact to Earth. With just four days out in theaters, fans (including one of InStyle’s cover girls, Olivia Wilde, and rock legend Sebastian Bach), have taken to Twitter to rave about the breathtaking blockbuster hit. Scroll down to see all of their reactions — we promise there are no spoilers! More
British songstress Rita Ora was named the new face of DKNY back in July, and her first campaign photos for the brand are finally here! The singer (and now model) rocks DKNY’s Resort 2014 collection in the ads, and she looks good. Shot in New York City’s Times Square by Lachlan Bailey, Ora oozes cool edginess, and we would expect nothing less from her! Invoking the more glamorous side of NYC, she fiercely poses with a taxi, looking youthful and sophisticated at the same time. We are loving the bold ads from the the undeniably urban-chic brand, which make us adore the Big Apple and Ora even more than we already do! Check out the full campaign and video at dkny.com.

Charlize Theron Thinks They Made a Mistake, Nicole Kidman Thanks Her “Mum” at the Power of Women EventOct 7, 2013 @ 4:14 pm
It was ladies’ night at the Variety’s 5th Annual Power of Women event presented by Lifetime at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hill. Hollywood’s biggest stars including Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman were honored for their inspiring philanthropic efforts. “I always think there was a mistake made and somehow somebody put my name down on a list that wasn’t supposed to happen,” Theron said to reporters. “It’s just really humbling because I feel like these women are women that I really look up to on every level.” Theron, who was honored for her work with her namesake organization, Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, was also joined by Kidman who was applauded for her work with UN Women. “The reason I’m here today for doing this work is my mum,” Kidman said. “From the minute I was tiny, [she] was always teaching me to be socially aware and passionate, and my father as well. It’s what I’ve seen and they’ve educated and wired my brain and heart in a particular way.” The evening’s other honorees included Kerry Washington (President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities), Amy Poehler (Worldwide Orphans Foundation), Elizabeth Banks (for her work on behalf of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women), Jennifer Hudson (Julian D. King Gift Foundation), and Amy Pascal (Teen Line). “This is about our causes, our beliefs and for me, it’s about gender equality and eradicating violence against women,” Kidman continued to reporters. “I’m just grateful to have the opportunity to talk about it, so thanks for listening.” We hear you, Nicole!

Just as your closet goes through a seasonal update, your accessories should, as well. Try out some statement-making, fall-appropriate velvet shades—big in color and deliciously plush in fabric, they’re a step up from your average plastic or metal frames. Fun fact: The luxurious finish was originally developed for the interior of a Ferrari. If you’re ready to commit to the trend, look to Italia Independent, an Italian lifestyle brand (Jessica Alba is a fan!), for their velvet-cloaked “UV-Lux” sunglasses ($197-$207). Unsure of how to choose from the jewel tones? If you have rosy undertones, opt for blue or green shades. If your complexion is more golden, go with red or purple. Not ready to go quite so bold? Try out a black velvet version from ASOS ($20) to seamlessly work the rich material into your wardrobe.

While Ashley Madekwe‘s character on Revenge may not be on-screen as much this season, the star continues to inspire our style choices in the real world, and we’re especially eager to try out the statement-making red lip she wore to The Fourth-Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in Los Angeles over the weekend. “It was nearly 90 degrees in Los Angeles on Saturday, so we went with a pretty, barely-there makeup look for Ashley,” Madekwe’s makeup artist Lauren Andersen told InStyle.com exclusively. Andersen started with a flawless backdrop for the killer lip: She began with a layer of YSL Touche Eclat Foundation ($55; yslbeautyus.com), then used Laura Mercier’s bronzer ($32; lauramercier.com) to add a slight contour. She took a simple approach when it came to the eyes, opting for the deep brown in Avon’s True Color Shadow Quad in Chocolate Sensation ($6; avon.com) all over the star’s lids, then used Votre Vu Brow Wax ($17; votrevu.com) and Avon’s Mega Effects Mascara ($10; avon.com) to frame the eye. A generous amount of Avon’s Ultra Color Lipstick in Cherry Jubilee ($6; avon.com), a deep burgundy-red, provided the finishing touch.

We have long hoped that Kate Moss would design once again, and our wish has come true! It may just be starting to feel like fall, but come spring, the supermodel will launch a new collection for Topshop that will be released worldwide. Moss designed for the store between 2007 and 2010, and the partnership was met with much fanfare and frenzied shoppers, us included! Moss and Sir Phillip Green (above, right), owner of Topshop and longtime pal of the model, decided to restart their collaboration on vacation together in August. “I have really missed being involved in the design process, and working with the team at Topshop. I am very excited to create a new collection that bears my name,” Moss revealed. Currently, the supermodel is hard at work on the collection alongside the brand’s creative director, Kate Phelan, and her stylist friend, Katy England. Made up of around 40 ready-to-wear styles including clothing, footwear and accessories, the spring line will be sold in the retailer’s stores and on Topshop.com starting in April 2014. The designs are inspired by Moss’ personal wardrobe — because who wouldn’t want a piece influenced by her covetable closet?!
