Nostalgia for the ’90s isn’t going anywhere! At New York Fashion Week, it was clear designers had the pre-millennial period on their minds, picking up specific characteristics, like mules and overalls, that once defined the decade. But don’t think they were straight-up copying and pasting ’90s trends into their spring/summer 2014 collection—they gave their own 21st-century spin. Marcus Wainwright and David Neville (of Rag & Bone) remade classic dungarees into clean, minimalist overalls, and Donna Karan (of DKNY) embroidered patches onto cool hip-hugging denims, pairing them with double toppers. The models at Victoria Beckham trotted down the runway in clunky mules, which were made modern when styled with sleek, super-sporty styles. And in a logomania frenzy, Alexander Wang playfully splashed his namesake brand across tops, skirts and dresses with leather cut-outs. Yes, fashion is cyclical, but the latest takes on ’90s trends make them seem brand new all over again.
