While the rest of the world is enjoying the last breaths of summer, we’re already looking toward spring and obsessing over the ubiquitous matte orange lips at NYFW. At Creatures of the Wind, NARS makeup artist James Boehmer concurred, saying, “The real statement is the satin textured orange lip.” Boehmer used Red Square Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($25 at narscosmetics.com) and Timanfaya Satin Lip Pencil (New for Spring 2014; for now try Heat Wave Lipstick with Triple X Lip Gloss $26 at narscosmetics.com). At Prabal Gurung, Charlotte Tilbury used Mac Lip Mixes ($15 at maccosmetics.com) to create eye-popping hues she called “fluoro-pastels.” Charlotte Willer used Color Sensational Vivids Lipstick by Maybelline in Electric Orange and Neon Red ($7.99 at maybelline.com) at DKNY—mixing the two shades and applying with a lip brush. Lips were then blotted to create a matte, stained finish. At Rag and Bone, Revlon Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman said, “This look focuses on textures with a matte lip and luminous skin, but it’s not about being sweet; she’s still a cool Rag & Bone girl.” But who can wait? We suggest getting a jump start on the season and rocking a tomato statement lip for fall.
