“It was a big one!” That is how costume designer Janie Bryant described the latest episode of Mad Men. And she’s right. With scenes at home, in the office, en route to the beach, and at a children’s camp, Bryant worked hard to make sure each look was just right for the scene. “It’s about the costume being able to speak to the scene emotionally or evoke a mood or tell something about the character,” she said of how she picked the dozens of looks. We loved so many of them—Joan’s perfectly nautical beach look, Peggy’s happy polka dot dress, and Bob Benson’s short shorts among them. On Sunday, we teamed up with Facebook to launch our Cannes Film Festival edition of the Red Carpet Talk Meter, which measured the amount of buzz surrounding the festival. One key fact we found out: The most popular men talked about in the United States, France, and globally all differ! In the States, Michael Douglas topped the trend list for his role as Liberace in Behind the Candleabra. In France, status updates veered toward the Suit & Tie persuasion, with Justin Timberlake taking the top rank at Cannes’ home base. But the man with the biggest buzz around the globe would be Leonardo DiCaprio, who had fans worldwide swooning over Gatsby.

Week after week, we chat with Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant to get the inside scoop on what Joan, Peggy, Betty, Megan, and the ladies of the show wear each episode. But this week, there’s someone else who caught our eye: Bob Benson (played by James Wolk) and his short-shorts swim trunks. That’s why we called Bryant to find out the story behind the fish-covered beach gear. ”They were a vintage pair that we found at one of the costume shops and we rented them,” Bryant told InStyle.com from her Los Angeles home base. “Bob is whimsical in his own way, and I always wanted him to wear colors that were always just a little off. I felt like that was just part of his personality. He’s always saying these funny quirky lines and has this funny way about him, so I loved the idea of him having colors that were just a tad… off. You do get a sense about him that he’s very much the overt the people-pleaser. He’s really fun to dress.” And fun to watch, too! Mad Men fans kept Tweeting about the shorts throughout the show, which prompted Wolk to respond: “Soaking up the sun in Bob’s too short shorts.” Bryant added: “You’ve got great legs.” Agreed!

Inside the Party: Fergie, Bill Clinton, and More Support AIDS Awareness at the 21st Annual Life BallMay 28, 2013 @ 2:30 pm
True to its name, the 21st Annual Life Ball was full of life! The event, held in Vienna, Austria, is one of the largest fundraisers for HIV and AIDS foundations in Europe, and it seems to get bigger and grander every year. This time, the evening started with a fashion show by Roberto Cavalli, then guests—including Kelly Osbourne (in Vivienne Westwood) and Fergie (in Valentino)—headed to the Viennese Hofburg Palace for the Arabian Nights-inspired party. The venue was decked out in opulent décor inspired by the legend of Scheherazade from the Arabian tale of One Thousand and One Nights, a theme that also inspired the beaded and feather-covered ensemble worn by model Karolina Kurkova. Among the highlights: AIDS activist Sir Elton John addressed the crowd alongside President Bill Clinton and American Idol alum Adam Lambert serenaded the crowd. Memorial Day barbecues can’t compare. Heather Graham has gone around the world to promote The Hangover Part III, and she’s packed a much more conservative wardrobe than her movie character, Jade, ever would. For the Paris premiere, she wore two-tone Talbot Runhof; for the London premiere, she chose a black gown by Max Azria Atelier; for the BBC’s The Graham Norton Show—where she witnessed the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion—she chose a Black Halo jumpsuit; and for the Los Angeles premiere, she picked Herve L. Leroux in, fittingly, a jade hue. Which look do you like best? Tell us by voting in the poll below!
