The happy-to-dark nature of Mad Men‘s lastest episode (season six, episode five, “The Flood”)—which told the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination through the reactions of the characters—was as much reflected in the scenes and dialogue as it was in the clothing. “It was a big episode for costume design,” costume designer Janie Bryant (shown inset) told InStyle.com. “The colors reflect the mood of the show. It changes from the colors in the beginning [like Peggy in sunny yellow while shopping for an apartment] to the dark palette after the assassination. It’s like life. One moment you think everything is beautiful and cheery and sunny, and there are moments in everyone’s life that something sad and dark happens. I wanted to evoke that darkness for all of the characters.” And she did just that—just after the bad news was delivered, the bright palette seen at the formal awards ceremony turned dark and mournful.
