“It’s all about the ladies being bold,” Mad Men‘s costume designer Janie Bryant told InStyle.com of her approach to the latest episode, which aired Sunday, April 14. And she delivered: Peggy exuded authority in her deep purple three-piece design, while Sylvia radiated elegance in a vintage blue dress. Meanwhile, Megan returned to her cable-knit sweater to deliver bad news her new pal. “Megan wore this cable-knit a lot last year, and she wore it when she was depressed,” Bryant explained. “Because this scene was so sad, and Megan was sad in the scene, I wanted to repeat the sweater.” She added a modern twist, just to change with the times. “She’s grown from struggling actress to now being in a soap opera, so I added a collared blouse and wool plaid pants, which is very modern for the period.” Click the photo to get more behind-the-scenes detail, straight from Bryant!
Beyoncé opened her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour in Belgrade last night and debuted the most scandalous costume we’ve ever seen her wear: This crystal-encrusted bodysuit, inspired by the nude female form. Designed by costume specialists The Blonds (as seen in the sketch they provided above), the piece incorporated more than 30,000 hand-embroidered Swarovski crystals, and it took around 600 hours to create. “When Beyoncé’s creative director Ty Hunter first approached us about collaborating on the Mrs. Carter World Tour, we were ecstatic to say the least!” designer David Blond exclusively told InStyle.com. “The idea was to celebrate the female form, which is something we always strive to do with every collection.” His design partner Phillipe echoed: “Our original inspiration was the female nudes painted by Tamara de Lempicka and the idea of being covered in crystallized honey which provided the color palette. This is a couture piece for a legend, so there was no holding back and it was beyond what we had ever attempted before. We believe it is one of the most provocative and glamorous looks ever seen on the stage.” It is indeed! When Brittany Snow arrived at the MTV Movie Awards this weekend, there was something a little different about her blonde bob, which appeared angled on one side and shorter on the other. “It’s a little fake,” Snow told InStyle.com of her style. “It’s not cut. My hair length is actually a little shorter. It’s an extension piece and then we cut it.” So smart! Why the change-up? “My [Lela Rose] dress is so classy and elegant, so I wanted to do something a little edgy with my hair,” Snow told InStyle.com. “So we decided to angle it. I thought it would be cool!” Simple enough, and it worked. If you try the look, shop for an extension that matches your hue and add texturizer to your roots before clipping it in to avoid it slipping out of place.

It’s no secret that most women tend to be their own worst critics. Dove is out to change that. Its new campaign “Real Beauty Sketches,” currently making the rounds on Facebook and Twitter, asked seven women to sit behind a curtain and describe themselves to a FBI-trained forensic composite artist. Next, strangers who briefly met one of these seven women were asked to do the same—sit behind a curtain and describe the woman to the forensic composite artist. The results are enlightening to say the least. “I should be more grateful of my natural beauty,” one woman said after learning the results. “It effects everything. It couldn’t be more critical to our happiness.” Watch the video above, and then scroll down to take our poll: Do you think you are too critical of your own look? More
Contestants on last night’s Dancing With The Stars had to perform alongside a professional couple for 15 seconds of synchronized choreography—a challenge that Karina Smirnoff and partner, Baltimore Ravens player Jacoby Jones, passed with flying colors… literally. The pair wowed the crowd during a jive to Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally,” in which Jones actually leapt over Smirnoff at full height (impressive!). And the costumes were just as lively as the dance itself. “The jive is about being colorful in so many different ways—facial expressions, movements, and of course through the outfits,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com. “With this in mind, I decked out my hot pink ensemble with fringe and rhinestone accents for extra flash.” It paid off: The pair got their best ever score , a 26 out of 30! See what the rest of America thought by tuning in to the live results show on ABC at 9/8c tonight.

It was a reunion of seasoned actors at the Mardi Gras-themed National Dance Institute Annual Gala in New York, which raised money for the non-profit’s mission of providing arts education programs to public school children in under-resourced neighborhoods of New York City. Bernadette Peters was on hand to present Homeland star Mandy Patinkin with the organization’s top honor in recognition of his commitment to arts and culture in NYC. “I’m the grateful one,” he told InStyle.com, noting that his two children were in NDI. “It deeply formed their lives in form of community, and put into their bodies a sense of confidence that they took with them everywhere. I’m honor them for the gift they gave to our family.” The gala included several performances by children in the program as well as a silent auction featuring Kindles curated by stars like Alec Baldwin, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Whoopi Goldberg.
