Did you enjoy a tall glass of H20 today? Consider yourself lucky. Currently, 780 million people are without access to safe water, water.org reports, which is why we’re throwing our support behind World Water Day today, an annual international event that raises awareness and advocates for freshwater globally and sustainable water resources. And we’re not the only ones—Matt Damon founded the non-profit water.org to get the message out, and you can help, too. Visit water.org/help to find out how you can get involved, make a donation at donate.water.org, and post a picture on Instagram and hashtag it #waterday. There’s also a super-handy water bottle (perfect for spring and summer trips!) that Damon’s BFF Ben Affleck adores—pick one up yourself for $25 at water.org/gift; proceeds go directly to supporting water.org’s initiatives.

It’s great that similar projects are supported even by famous people. Reading the stories of people whose children are dying in many parts of the world because of the lack of water resources I realize how important it is to stop waisting it and to do as much as we can for its protection. I actively participate in a project called the Greenest City 2020 Action Plan introduced here in my native Vancouver whose aim is to eliminate the negative impact that our actions often have on the environment and the issues such as water consumption or the quality of drinking water are among the most important ones on our list. Clean water is only one part of a series of much more complicated issues but I believe if all of the points mentioned in the plan were immediately put into practice we could see the desired effect even in the short term.
