3 Tips for Finding Your Perfect Spring Coat

Mar 5, 2013 @ 6:21 pm

The weather may be iffy, but here’s a sure thing—a spring coat that offers coverage with a touch of class. Here are three things to keep in mind when you’re finding the perfect one.

1. THE IMPACT
These sophisticated toppers with their dressmaker details (think fly fronts, princess seams, Peter Pan collars, ornamental pockets) instantly say polished and pulled together.

2. THE FIT
The body-skimming, knee-length silhouette flatters most figures. Choose an A-line or a swing shape for more ease.

3. THE OPTIONS
Go dressy? Yes. But you can also try a casual version in an unembellished fabric over slim pants. Pair with ballet flats for a ’60s gamine vibe.

Some of our favorite toppers of the season are pictured above: from left, Ann Taylor ($198 at anntaylor.com), Marc by Marc Jacobs ($698 at Marc by Marc Jacobs), and ICB ($695 at icbnyc.com). See more by flipping to page 285 of InStyle‘s March issue, now on newsstands. And a special treat for New York readers—check out editor Dana Avidan Cohn talking about her favorite spring coats on The Better Show on CBS Wednesday, March 6 at 6 a.m.

Runway Looks We Love: Chanel

Mar 5, 2013 @ 5:59 pm

The world revolves around Chanel, or at least it did today, when Karl Lagerfeld dropped a globe into the set at the Grand Palais runway for his latest show for Paris Fashion Week. (The globe even illuminated with the locations of the label’s boutiques.) The clothing also served as a reminder of Chanel’s dominance: Like the globe’s night sky, the designs were dark, brooding, and sprinkled with celestial sparkle. Much of the clothing had its place in the evening hours, including sheer layered dresses and an asymmetric gown that captured the relaxed elegance that makes Lagerfeld king of the fashion world. See our favorite looks in the gallery.

There are many perks to being Ginnifer Goodwin‘s boyfriend—as Josh Dallas will tell you—and, in fact, Josh Dallas did. One reason he’s in love: She inspires his fashion. “She’s a fashionista,” the Once Upon at Time star told InStyle.com at the PaleyFest panel discussion of the hit ABC show in Los Angeles this week. “You got to keep up and try to be as stylish as she is.” (Cue the awwws.) And they’re not the only pair to work in fashion tandem. Click through the gallery to see more couples with similar looks.

Runway Looks We Love: Saint Laurent

Mar 5, 2013 @ 3:05 pm

For his second outing at iconic French fashion house Saint Laurent, designer Hedi Slimane surprised us with a ’90s grunge-inspired collection. There were baby-doll dresses, oversize flannels, fishnets, and floral chiffon. While high-fashion and plaid flannel shirts don’t normally go hand-in-hand, Slimane did intersperse some luxe elements into the 48-look collection—like the blush fur coat (pictured at right) and some richly embroidered leather pieces. Tough-chic motorcycle boots and delicate strands of pearls finished off each look. See our favorites in the gallery.

Dallas Season 2, Epsiode 7: The Designer Behind Pamela’s Leather Coat

Mar 5, 2013 @ 2:55 pm

The latest episode of Dallas aired last night, and it featured Julie Gonzalo’s Pamela still trying to conceal her growing baby bump—and she did, thanks to the handy work of costume designer Rachel Sage Kunin. “Pamela is wearing a red sweater dress with this great Mackage black coat. I love that she has the baby bump, but it’s disguised by the shape of the swing coat,” said Sage Kunin. “The wool body with leather sleeves makes this a perfect choice for Pamela.” Perhaps because it’s just as fierce as the leading lady. Click through for more from Sage Kunin on last night’s Dallas style.

Let the battle for Lady Mary’s heart begin! While we’re still mourning the loss of beloved Cousin Matthew (Dan Stevens), who tragically died in a car crash just moments after seeing his newborn son, it seems that his widowed wife Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) will be getting two new potential love interests for the fourth season of Downton Abbey. Joining the drama-filled estate will be aristocrat Charles Blake—played by Julian Ovenden (left), 36-year-old British actor who made his mark in West End productions across the pond—and Lord Gillingham, an old family friend who returns to the Abbey, which will be played by 27-year-old Welsh actor Tom Cullen (he starred in the mini-series World Without End). So, who will Lady Mary choose? Place your early bets in the comments below.
