Oscars 2013: Designer Red Carpet Debut! Alexis Mabille for Zoe Saldana

Feb 24, 2013 @ 11:49 pm

Zoe Saldana hit the red carpet at tonight’s Academy Awards in a gorgeous and on-trend pale gray and black gown by up and coming French haute couture designer Alexis Mabille. The 35-year-old is a fairly recent inductee into the über-elite group of haute couture creators, of which there are fewer than 20 in the world (think: Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, and Jean Paul Gaultier). He launched his house in 2005 with the help of his family, and with a unique twist: the collection was unisex, containing designs that aimed to flatter both men and women alike. We certainly think it flattered Saldana —congrats to the designer on his big Oscars debut!

Oscars 2013: One Look, Two Pricetags—Both Stunning

Feb 24, 2013 @ 10:34 pm

Of all the stars who walked the red carpet at tonight’s Oscars, two in particular stood out to InStyle editor-at-large Hal Rubenstein: Reese Witherspoon and Helen Hunt. And while Witherspoon is wearing a navy gown (and jewelry) by high fashion designer Louis Vuitton and Hunt is in a dress by mass retailer H&M, their styles share a common bond. “To show off a woman’s form with great simplicity is such a great way for a woman to dress,” Rubenstein said of the two looks. When Rubenstein saw Witherspoon on the carpet, he noted: “This has such a clean, simple elegance. This dress shows that you don’t need a lot of flash. It fits perfectly. No big jewelry. Nothing in the way.” Less really is more!

It’s not all about the ingenues tonight! Although all eyes are on starlets like Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, and Anne Hathaway for their gorgeous hair and makeup choices, seasoned red carpet vets are bringing just as much glamour to the 2013 Oscars. Between their perfectly-styled strands and glowing complexions, the winning looks worn by Helen Hunt, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Halle Berry, Salma Hayek, Jennifer Aniston, and Naomi Watts are among our favorites. Each star opted out of dramatic lipsticks, eye shadows, and updos to allow their ensembles to take center stage. “I was inspired to keep Halle’s look very tonal and casual with this dress, because it’s a very striking and bold look,” said Berry’s makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua. “She was presenting the James Bond tribute, and the dress is very Bond Girls—it’s kind of like wearing a Cadillac!” According to the red carpet pros, less is more! We want to know: Whose look was your favorite? Tell us in the comments!

Oscars 2013: Finishing Off Jennifer Lawrence’s Look? Dior’s Dreamy Nude Lipstick

Feb 24, 2013 @ 9:15 pm

The stars have just finished making their way down the red carpet at tonight’s Oscars, and Jennifer Lawrence‘s beauty look is already one of our favorites. To balance the star’s graphic smoky eye, her makeup artist Jillian Dempsey opted for a sheer nude lip, picking up the Dior Addict Lipstick in Beige Casual #222. We love how it adds something extra to Lawrence’s natural lip color, and although nude hues are a go-to for strong eye looks, the lipstick also looks great when worn on its own. Pick up a tube for $31 at nordstrom.com now!

Oscars 2013: How To Get Anne Hathaway’s Perfectly Tousled Pixie

Feb 24, 2013 @ 8:46 pm

All eyes are on nominee Anne Hathaway tonight. We’ve been following her dreamy red carpet looks this award season and of course, that perfect pixie. Her hairstylist Adir Abergel told us his inspiration behind tonight’s more voluminous version was 1950s elegance. “I wanted to keep it simple, classic and for it to have timeless glamour,” he told InStyle.com. He also wanted a bit more texture tonight so he used Frederic Fekkai Coif Bouffant ($25 at nordstrom.com)—sweeping the product root to end, emphasizing the front—which he says is critical for short hairstyles. “This gave it enough hold to last all night,” he said. Then he brushed her strands through with a Denman brush ($13 at amazon.com) and finished off with Fekkai Coiff Nonchalant Piecing & Forming Wax ($25 at fekkai.com). “I messed it up a little,” he said. Abergel had another short-haired fashion icon in mind when he created the style: Princess Diana!
