How To Take Care of Your Shoes (Because They Take Care of You!)

Feb 28, 2013 @ 5:30 pm

The perfect pair of heels makes you look taller, leaner, and definitely more stylish, so how do you return the favor for your footwear?

1. AIR THEM OUT.
If they’re really soaked from rain, try using a UVC light-powered insert, like SteriShoe, to disinfect and ward off potential viruses.

2. KEEP IT CLEAN
Leather shoes need a sweeping from a soft cloth, while suede pairs benefit from a stiff brush.

3. FIGHT ODOR.
Put cedar chip inserts inside closed-toe shoes to absorb odor-causing dampness. Try LA Closet Design, they have great ones.

For ingenious ways to organize your shoes and the rest of your closet, flip to page 349 of InStyle‘s March issue or download it on your tablet!

With a baby on the way for Duchess Catherine and Prince William off saving stranded hikers in Wales, the royal family is always in the spotlight. And while she may be gone, Princess Diana is never forgotten: she’s one of the most well-known style icons of all time, and a collection of her most iconic dresses will soon be auctioned off by London auction house Kerry Taylor. Included in the auction are these four pieces above—from left, the sequin-covered Catherine Walker (1989), a plunging black velvet gown by Bruce Oldfield (1985), the one-shoulder ivory crepe gown with pink sequin appliques by Catherine Walker (1991), and this off-the-shoulder midnight blue Victor Edelstein velvet gown (1985), where she unforgettably twirled on the dance floor with actor John Travolta. The dresses are expected to fetch anywhere between $45,000 to $400,000—all to own a piece of princess history. Click here to see the rest of the dresses up for auction, and check out the Today show’s video highlighting more of the designer details.

Fashion Word of the Day: Craquele

Feb 28, 2013 @ 4:34 pm

Time for a fun little fashion lesson! Our word of the day is: Craquelé. It’s the fancy French word for the word crackle (stemming from craquelure), which denotes the natural cracks and crevices that occur over time in ancient ceramics and paintings (think: Mona Lisa). Now, Miuccia Prada adapted the idea and used it for her just-launched Miu Miu accessory collection (shown right), achieving the look by cracking the leather’s colored dye on the surface. The two-tone craquelé leather totes just hit miumiu.com ($1,395 to $1,965), and there are pumps available as well ($695), in colors like cipria, red, geranio, and black. Got it? OK, good—school’s out!

See the New Marilyn Monroe-Inspired Collection That’s Headed to Macy’s

Feb 28, 2013 @ 3:15 pm

Marilyn Monroe was more than America’s most famous sex symbol—she was a style icon who continues to inspire generations of women. With her legacy in mind, Macy’s announced it will launch a line inspired by Monroe, with pieces ranging from $29 to $89, in stores and macys.com this March. “Marilyn Monroe’s appeal is legendary, and Macy’s is excited to launch a collection that draws inspiration from her timeless style,” Macy’s chief marketing officer Martine Reardon said in a statement. Taking cues from the ultra-girly style Marilyn was so famous for, the line includes tie-front crop tops, cherry-patterned sundresses, and, of course, polka-dot and halter-style dresses that cinch at the waist, inspired by her infamous white dress from 1955′s The Seven Year Itch. Click through the gallery to see all the extra-girly styles.

Vegetarian We Love: Leona Lewis to Launch Cruelty-Free Beauty Collection for The Body Shop

Truth be told, that catchy chorus from Leona Lewis‘s breakout single “Bleeding Love” is still hard for us to shake from memory. The Body Shop must have had the song on repeat as well, because the eco-friendly beauty retailer teamed up with the singer to launch a collection of makeup and fragrance for spring, free of animal-tested products. “I’m really passionate about beauty and great beauty products. I’ve been a vegetarian since I was really young, so all of the products are 100% vegetarian,” the star said in an announcement video. “I’ve always been quite conscientious of animal rights, fair trade, and to me, The Body Shop encompasses all of that.” Lewis’s cruelty-free lineup hits The Body Shop stores and thebodyshop-usa.com starting in April, and on March 26, the singer will livestream an exclusive gig via The Body Shop’s Facebook page. Her X-Factor mentor Simon Cowell must be so proud!

Plus, we tested the best green beauty products on the market to see which ones really work. Find out in our gallery!
