Olivia Pope’s Spy-Inspired Outfit on Tonight’s Scandal

Nov 15, 2012 @ 6:09 pm

Things are unraveling quickly on Scandal! As Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) struggles to hold it together, her tight-knit crew of crisis managers faces some serious predicaments of their own on tonight’s all-new episode, aptly titled, “Spies Like Us.” Abby, Huck, Quinn, Harrison—whose secrets will be revealed? Pope goes into investigative mode and costume designer Lyn Paolo told InStyle.com that she outfitted Washington accordingly in a sleek Diane von Furstenberg blouse and the same Tory Burch trench coat she’s worn since the pilot. “Both Kerry and I felt that we should work her trench into the spy story line,” Paolo said. “We went with a blouse-and-pant combo as opposed to our usual suitings, more of an undercover look for her.” See who gets ousted tonight on Scandal at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.

Nov 15, 2012 @ 6:00 pm

Black Friday, or in this year’s case Black Thursday, is in one week (not that we’re counting!). And lest you think the fashion flock is over the biggest shopping day of all, think again. Calvin Klein‘s Creative Director, Francisco Costa, is just as excited about it as the rest of us. “We need another shopping event just for Black Friday. I just want to shop all day!” Costa told InStyle.com at the Phoenix House Fashion Award Dinner in New York City. We agree! And if you’re headed out to buy holiday gifts, Costa suggests looking for something unique. “You can go personal or creative, but I always think that creative gifts are the best.” Before you hit the stores, click the link below to check out retailers’ Black Friday hours and deals.

Parks and Recreation Hairstylist Reveals Amy and Rashida’s Must-Have Product

Nov 15, 2012 @ 4:52 pm

Tonight’s episode of Parks and Recreation is getting politically charged, with Vice President Joe Biden guest starring! We’re excited to see him interact with longtime admirer Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), but how will she ensure that her strands are just right? That’s where the show’s hairstylist, Terrie V. Owen, comes in. Although Pawnee’s most hilarious women keep us laughing, flawless hair is no joke, so Owen turns to White Sands Liquid Texture Styling Spray for both Poehler and Ann Perkins (Rashida Jones). “I use it when I need the waves and curls to stand up to long shooting days on set,” she said. Thanks to its shatter-proof hold that doesn’t leave hair stiff, the product has become a favorite behind the scenes of many TV shows, including True Blood and Mad Men. Pick up a bottle for $19 at whitesandsproducts.com and tune in to NBC at 9:30 p.m. EST to catch the new episode of Parks and Recreation!

Anna Karenina Costumes: “It’s About Her Moving Between Triumph and Humiliation”

Nov 15, 2012 @ 4:29 pm

At a recent advanced screening of Anna Karenina—the film opens in theaters nationwide tomorrow, November 16—there was one thing we immediately noticed about the beautiful Jacqueline Durran-designed costumes: Star Keira Knightley wears mirror-image dresses from the beginning of the film to the end—in other words, the same structures, but in different colors. Durran told InStyle.com that she used this device to illustrate how the titular character moves from the heights of society to (spoiler alert!) being a complete outcast. “With the ballgown near the beginning of the film, she [Anna Karenina] triumphs in a black dress amidst all the dancers at the ball, who are in pastels. For her to be in black makes sense—she was then contrasted to the society around her,” Durran told InStyle.com. “And when she goes back to the opera at the end, it is almost the exact same dress, but in white, and it’s the opposite thing that’s happening. That’s the high point of her humiliation.” Durran, nominated for two Oscars for her costume work on Atonement and Pride and Prejudice (both starring Knightley), also enjoyed the surprise element of dressing Anna in black first, and then white. “You would imagine her in white first and black second, so the fact that it was reversed—I love that,” she said. Click here to find out where the film is playing near you, and stay tuned to InStyle.com for more costume details from Durran tomorrow!

Thom Filicia on His American Beauty Interior Design Book and Tina Fey

Nov 15, 2012 @ 3:35 pm

Interior designer Thom Filicia was never one to mince words on Bravo’s hit series, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, but he’s showing a different side in his just-released interior design book, American Beauty: Renovating and Decorating A Beloved Retreat (Clarkson Potter, $45). The tome uses photography to tell the story of how Filicia discovered a home in serious need of a makeover on Skaneateles Lake in Central New York, where he spent much of his childhood. Filicia bought the house and spent nearly two years doing renovations. We caught up with Thom to hear more about the project and get his interior design advice. “The house was just charming and simple enough that it could have a slightly modern aesthetic,” Filicia told InStyle.com. “It’s on a really beautiful piece of property in a community that is very special to me.” And his own witty tone isn’t the only humor found in the book: Reigning queen of comedy Tina Fey, a long time fan of Thom’s, wrote the foreword. “Tina is a fabulous woman,” Filicia told InStyle.com. “She’s just really cool—very down to earth, relaxed, and smart.” And what about us mere mortals interested in tackling our own interior design project? “Put your stamp on it!” Filicia said. “Make it feel like it is an honest and authentic extension of who you are and what you’re about. Putting that personal stamp on an interior turns a space into a space with a soul.” Buy a copy of his book for yourself and pick up a few as holiday gifts!
