Dancing With the Stars: Karina Smirnoff on Her “Hero” Dress

Last night’s episode of Dancing With the Stars was a tribute to Veteran’s Day, so pro-dancer Karina Smirnoff designed her costume with the military in mind. “I wanted to make sure the colors of my dress represented our troops as well as the powerful tango,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com of the dance she performed with partner Apolo Anton Ohno. “The tango is a unique, fun, strong, and dominant dance, so I wanted to create two sides to the dress—a softer lower part and a powerful top. The high-waisted skirt was elegant and sophisticated, and the top part screamed out empowerment,” Smirnoff said. The pair earned a 29.5 out of 30 for their tango to “Holding Out for a Hero” (which featured Ohno zip-lining from the balcony onto the dance floor!), but is it enough to survive tonight’s double elimination? Jennifer Lawrence Smoky Eye How-To

We love a great smoky eye, and the soft, steely version Jennifer Lawrence wore at the Silver Linings Playbook screening in New York City definitely grabbed our attention! Lawrence’s makeup artist, Jillian Dempsey, drew inspiration from the star’s crisp black Christian Dior Spring 2013 pantsuit, and used Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick Eye Color in Steel ($24; lauramercier.com) on the actress’s upper and lower lash lines. Dempsey blended out the cream base to create a smoky effect and added Sateen Eye Color in Sable ($22; lauramercier.com) to areas she wanted to highlight. A swipe of the Kohl Pencil in Black Violet ($20; lauramercier.com) along Lawrence’s lash line provided extra definition, and a generous application of mascara finished the smoldering look. We’re so going to take a page from Jennifer’s smoky eye playbook!

Gossip Girl Fashion Credits: Season 6, Episode 5

Another show, another night of drama—the fifth episode of Gossip Girl’s final season aired last night, and the fashionable Upper East Siders made quite an impression at the annual debutante cotillion. Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) both sparkled big time. Serena stunned in a strapless Monique Lhuillier navy dress with black sequin detailing, while Blair looked chic in a black sequin cap-sleeved number, which she accessorized with Graziela crystal earrings. InStyle.com caught up with Kaling at Fox’s TCA party, where she spilled fashion secrets from the set of her show, The Mindy Project, in which the hilarious actress plays an ob-gyn. “I don’t want [my character] to be the doctor version of me—me just wearing scrubs,” Kaling told us. 27 Actors Take Over Broadway for the 24 Hour Plays

“It was the Wild West of Theater!” is how Amber Heard described last night’s performance of the 12th annual 24 Hour Plays, a theater experience presented by Montblanc in which six short plays are written, rehearsed, and performed in a 24-hour time period, all to benefit the Urban Arts Partnership, which supports arts education for children in need. “It was the best time. It was a lot of fun it was the kind of environment that allows you to feel free enough to really enjoy yourself and experiment with new things and it was for a good cause.” Heard was only one of the 27 actors who performed at the American Airlines Theater, and she and her fellow castmates—Vanessa Hudgens, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Olivia Wilde, Jack McBrayer, Justin Long, and Jason Biggs (in his third year performance) included—all breathed a sigh of relief at the end, toasting to their success with an after-party at B.B. King Blues Club. More than anything, now they can rest. “I’m excited for sleep more than you can imagine!” Heard added. Click through the gallery to see more of last night’s biggest parties.

Tamera Mowry Welcomes Baby Boy, Aden John Tanner Housley

Congratulations to Tamera Mowry and husband Adam Housley! The couple welcomed a baby boy, Aden John Tanner Housley, into the world on November 12. Born two weeks after his due date, the Tia & Tamera star was certainly ready for her son to arrive. “I seriously feel like I have been pregnant forever. Almost 10 months to be exact!” Tamera blogged in her column for People.com before she gave birth. The couple wed in 2011, and this is their first child. Congrats to the new parents! We’ll just have to wait and see if there’s a Sister, Sister in store for Aden…
